Takeaway fish and chips Friday night: not great, not bad. Just average.

Mohr Fish is a cool place to eat with its old school interior. The food there is generally good, although I've been disappointed a couple of times. It feels a little pricey to eat in, probably because of the decor, but realistically, you'd pay the same prices somewhere else.

A unique place - part old-school milk bar, part kitchen, part take-away shop with tables. Scrubbed clean and brightly lit, it's a place to eat good fish cooked well, not for a romantic or lingering dinner.

The waitress is typically pleasant and attentive, and is aware of what's going on. It's nice to be greeted with complimentary bread, and then to be served really well priced and delicious dishes. Prawn and fish dumplings are great, as is the fish pie. It's consistent, fast, and novel.

And you can buy wine or beer at the pub across the road and bring it in, glass and all. Very sweet and neat, and makes for a pretty easy meal.

It’s a tiny little place perched on the corner of Steel Street, with a handful of small tables and seating at the counter. They also do a fairly constant trade in take-aways, if you prefer to eat at home. With its bright lighting and white tiled interior, it’s not a place for romance, well, not

I used to be a regular at Mohr Fish but have been away for a couple of years, I always used to like their fresh, consistent menu. We were thinking fish & chips tonight and after remembering a recent review in the SMH off we went. We were served by a lovely young lady who was very friendly and attentive throughout. We started with the prawn/fish dumplings (very tasty but maybe a tad too much coriander flavour) and then fried prawns (battered nicely) but very salty.

For mains I tried the fish pie and my partner tried the fried fish & chips (fish was supposed to be flat-head but they said tonight it would be angel shark). The fish pie was delicious, however some of the fish pieces were a little tough, the fish and chips were fried perfectly with a light crispy batter but like the fried prawns very salty.

Overall the meals were cooked very well but the fried prawns and the fried fish were actually incredibly salty, the fish so salty that we had to bring a couple of pieces home for the pooch. It's a shame considering everything was cooked so well, just very much over-seasoned. If you aren't a fan of salt, I would suggest that you request that no salt be added to the food so you can season to your own liking. I'm sure we'll be back.

I have been a regular at this outlet since its inception. One weekday afternoon this week I was stunned to see the lady behind the counter do some food preparation in the kitchen and then she served customers whilst she still wore the same plastic gloves. She took the money and gave us the change with the same hand that had been used to prepare food. She than returned to the kitchen and handled more food. She should be sacked for this illegal outrage. Never again will I return to this restaurant.

Yum, yum, yum. I found the bouillabaisse especially good. Interior does look a bit 'bright' at night, but for a quick bite it can't be beaten.

A bit busy, but the 'out-your name' down process worked well. Food was excellent and left fully to exploding! Banter between 'Front of House/Waiter' was good fun. Happily return again and probably again!

I'm surprised at some of the somewhat negative comments about this place. Albeit I only ever come here for lunch, and true enough, it has more a local milk bar retro look about it that is suitably more for lunch than dinner (think metal tables and high stools).

But apart from that, what really counts here is the food. I'm not overly a fan of deep fried fish, and yet I find myself coming back here for their juicy moist fish fillets coated in a wonderfully crisp and fluffly batter without leaving that oily deep fried residue that fried food can often leave.

The textural contrast is amazing, and I have never tasted anything like it. I'm sure it must be a secret recipe they keep tightly under their lids. It is by far the best fish and chips in Sydney, and I also always get takeaway which means it is cheaper still about $9.50 I think for a box of chips, 2 fillet fish, lemon and their own homemade tartare sauce.

Its a shame thought that their chips is very standard, and when asked we were told they just the normal frozen variety. Tartare sauce comes in a generous serve, and has a nice homemadeness about it, although I do like mine to be a little more tart. I've also tried their fish cake, which has a lot of asian influences in it and texturally resemble a meat patty? so don't expect it to be anything like those thai fish cakes you normally get. So the place has its flaws, but its a good thing that their fish is just too darn good for me not to come back.
