Tried Li'l Darlin for the first time recently. Went in for a drink at around 10:30 pm on a Friday night. The music was at nose-bleed level, we couldn't hear each other or the waitress and she certainly couldn't hear us. The manager was also happily slugging back the product, something I prefer not to see in a venue. The waitress did her best to serve and was really the outstanding feature of this place, but I have to say the cocktails we ordered were pretty awful. I left most of mine, but at least we only paid happy-hour prices for them. I'd say they are aiming solely and squarely for the under-25 crowd, and since I am in a different demographic, who am I to judge.
Lovely little addition to the station end of Surry Hills. We popped in after work on Friday, and despite pipping the masses by turning up just before 5 pm, it turned out that most tables were reserved for the more organised people who book things in advance.
We squeezed in by the window and tried a few different wines. As an opening special, they are selling selected pizzas for $5.50 for a "limited time". Too tempting to refuse.
We ordered the charred chorizo and chermoula, calling it a snack. It arrived, smelling amazing, but, size wise, it was definitely a snack. Good value for $5.50, but really poor value at its real price of $14.50.
It was delicious. Crunchy, thin base, charred on the bottom, with a slice of chorizo on every square, topped with a fresh, lively drizzle of chermoula. It went in about one minute.
After some debate we decided that we could order another one and just call it dinner. We ordered the mushroom pizza. This too was fantastic, great base, beautiful mushrooms.
Staff here were warm and chatty. It got very busy and at times the queues at the bar, where food orders also need to be placed, got a bit long. It appeared that the slow bar service was due to the number of customers ordering cocktails here.
We'll be back because we work nearby and because it's different to everything else in the area. Maybe next time we'll be clever enough to reserve a table?
