* Please note, as the Q-Station is part of NSW National Parks there is no driving of vehicles around the site. The visitors carpark is located near Reception. A regular free shuttle bus takes guests and visitors around the property leaving approximately every 15 minutes.

    We came away from our weekend at the Q Station (2nd march ) with mixed feelings. When we first arrived, we were greeted with lukewarm enthusiasm and given instructions on our stay. We set off with high expectations to the High Tea our son had paid for as a surprise for my birthday. And surprise it was...not in a good way!

    The scones were awfull--hard and cold as were the woeful sandwiches, which were nasty thick and dry. Ugh. The petit fours were equally horrible, which were clearly several days old, soggy ,and clearly all outsourced. Hmmm...and we were booked in for dinner. Oh dear!

    However, dinner was better--not brilliant but nowhere to go but up. Service here seems to be an issue. They have well-meaning staff but clearly not up to the job. We obviously got seated at the invisible table as it took forever to get their attention. There was no butter with the rolls. They were very slow to clear the table, etc. But food was adequate to good on the mains.

    Moving on to the rooms, it was here we were pretty happy in general. Their Harbourview Deluxe was a little exy for the standard but, given the location, was quite comfy and everything worked. All in all, I'd say avoid the High/low tea and just stick with the room.

    Great food. Tried the new menu and would definitely recommend it. Lovely entrees served on boards, and tasty mains. Tonight we try the desserts. We were staying at the q station so access was fine, however it's probably a bit of an adventure to get to otherwise. Wine was average - But service was excellent.

    High Tea was cheap and nasty. The sandwiches were very dry - how long had the food been left standing at room temperature before serving? Pork buns and Asian dumplings for High Tea - how strange. The sweet treats were very ordinary caramel slices, brownies and mini cupcakes - nothing like the advertised menu pictures at all. Very disappointing.

    When we asked for more champagne we were told immediately that it would be extra - we weren't expecting to have it for free, but why did they have to point out the obvious? Tea and coffees took a long time to arrive - there was no milk in the restaurant, we were told. And also no teaspoons, only wooden stirrers...

    When we asked for more coffees, again we were told that it would cost extra. Why would they assume that we would not be paying for extra items ordered?

    When we left, the person who had greeted us initially did not even bother getting up from her seat at the front door (she had her back turned) - not very hospitable, to say the least.

    We would definitely not recommend this venue and will not be returning.

    We received a warm welcome and the service attentive. The food was exceptional and surprisingly fair value-for-money. Accessing the restaurant and learning the history of the venue only adds to the enjoyment of the evening.

    So disappointing. We went here expecting a great Saturday night dinner out and certainly didn't get that. From the moment we arrived at the filthy carpet Reception area where the staff blankly told us to sit and wait for the bus to the restaurant, to our arrival at the restaurant where we were barely greeted by a waiter who told us someone else would find us our just went from bad to worse.

    The restaurant was busy, we had a booking, there seemed to be plenty of staff wandering around not doing very much. The table next to ours remained laden with dirty plates, napkins on the floor for our entire meal even though the people vacated it soon after we arrived. There was another napkin on the floor near our table and the staff just walked over it/around it all night. No one bothered to pick it up.

    We were only offered bread when we noticed the olive oil on the table and asked for it after our main courses had arrived. The portions are absurdly tiny - the barramundi main looked more like a starter - so we really needed that bread to fill up. All up - chaotic service, poor value, pointless location - there was no sense of being in an interesting historic location on the water (no water view at all). Where is the manager? A disgrace!

    We ate here tonight, our second time, because we were staying. For a hotel type restaurant the food and service is way above average. Entree and mains were hot, fresh, tasty and perfect size. Desserts were the only minor letdown as both were too big and too much preprepared. Apple pie, although nice, tasted like it was heated in the microwave. Although if I could make pie like it I would be very happy. At $179 for 2 x 3 course meals with a bottle of wine it was excellent value for money. Recommended.

    We dined there on Saturday 14th January and we never had any problems with service. The food was served quickly and was of an extremely high standard, we had no complaints. The menu is quite small and expensive but that is what we expected, people seem surprised (perhaps, they should look at the website first before booking). The only strange thing for us was when we asked which dessert the waitress would recommend and she replied some aren't very good go for the brulee. We took her advice and it was delicious.

    Interesting location, but the Boiler House was very underwhelming. We were 4, the table was set for 5 which they insisted on changing, that took 10 minutes to remove a glass and cutlery while we stood around outside.

    The wine list looked like it was from the set of Faulty Towers, it was printed, however, had been scribbled and written on, with most wines being crossed out, it looked extremely unprofessional. I knew in advance the meals were priced a little higher but I did not realise they would be tiny. 2 scallops with a teaspoon of crushed peas for $18 and $36 for a 125g steak and a scoop of what looked and tasted like powdered mashed potato.

    We also had a salt and pepper squid which looked and tasted like the frozen type that comes from Manly Freezers. The squid arrived almost cold so had toughened up, the steak was cooked well but with a diameter of 6cm it disappeared quickly, others had the Barramundi that was a good serve and nicely presented.

    The wine was the first thing ordered but arrived after the entrees and the coffee took forever despite there only 2 groups left in the restaurant and arrived cold. Summary: not slow with the food prep, but wait staff were very slow thus the cold food and coffee that I found sitting on the service bench and begged to be delivered, $350 for 4 entrees, 4 mains, 2 deserts, 2 coffees and a 1 bottle wine and we left hungry and unsatisfied.

    The best part of the night was the little tour that the shuttle bus driver gave us on the way back up the hill. Go to the Q station for the tour, don't bother going to the boiler house.

    Tourist or work party venue. Food seems to be prepared well though I question the quality (my beef was ideally prepared and served as requested but, unfortunately, had no flavour). I don't like to receive a menu then be advised after studying it that some selections are not available. The building which houses the restaurant is nestled in a beautiful cove on North Head its a shame that you can't see or enjoy the vista while seated. The best part of dining here is to learn the history about Q station without all the ghost nonsense.

    Quick summary: Lovely location and the staff are friendly. Service could be annoyingly slow for some, but, as we were in a relaxed mood etc, we didn't mind the wait too much.

    Food was good, but the serving size (especially the entree, given the prices) could be larger. Overall, we enjoyed this enough to make us consider going back another time.

    Finally, it's not the staff's fault if people bring toddlers to a restaurant on a weekend lunchtime. It's the parents fault if they are allowed to run around, being noisy (you know how little kids think screaming/screeching is a cool sound to make?). However, it Is the staff's fault if they allow a parent to change a dirty nappy in the restaurant, on the floor, even if it is over in a corner away from other diners.

    It's an open plan layout and the sight of that is not what we paid to see. There are baby change facilities available and staff should feel empowered to tell patrons to use them. If they don't feel confident to do so, then that's the management's fault for not empowering their staff.
