Back to proper pub grub for the Wallace after a few years in the wilderness with the Dumpling House first followed by the Bill & Tony's experiment. Big serves of good standard favourites like Sunday roasts, steaks and schnitzels at very reasonable prices ($16 for any of these three)compared to others in the area that take themselves way to seriously. Free pool on a Sunday and a dart board as well so what more could you really want?

Fairly good food. New menu is better than Bill & Toni's yet quality not quite as good! Has potential. Ambiance is cool, old style feel with lots of locals.. bartender, James, is a legend! keep it up!

The Bamboo Dumpling restaurant has gone, replaced with a Bill & Toni's Italian.
Ordered the rump steak and chips with pepper sauce. It arrived medium rare when I had ordered it medium well. It was good nonetheless. Only problem was the steak and sauce were piled on top of the chips making them soggy.

Note to all pub chefs: please put the chips on top or on the side of the steak!
Final comment: This pub could do with a dark beer or a boutique brewery beer or 2 on tap.

Anyone who liked the traditional pub fare and the daggy decor at the Willy Wallace may be disappointed that its eatery is now refurbished as Bamboo Dumpling House. However, different the food may be, it's certainly good, tasty and excellent value. The service was a bit patchy in the first week. They seemed a bit overwhelmed with the crowd but I think the place has potential.

Initially very happy to recommend friends, but the roast have not been as generous or as 'fresh roasted' as previously experienced.

One of the great traditional pubs. Love the lack of pretence and warm, honest atmosphere. Food is enjoyable in the spirit of pub food. Don't change a thing.

The best in Balmain. I wish it could stay a secret as the rest of the "pubs" have lost their appeal. Liz you are wonderful!

A genuine Balmain heritage, a pub like an Aussie local pub. Please do not renovate, do not change, do not touch a thing. Sunday roast is great value and taste, staff is friendly. It is a rare gem of a pub among so many over priced over hyped over crowded contemporary designer joints of Balmain.

Ah, the legendary Willie Wallace. Not so much a pub as a Balmain institution maintaining links to the heritage of Balmain's industrial and waterfront past. It is a pub, it has no airs or graces and it sells cold beers at proper pub prices. Offers great pub food at great prices. Not sure where else in Sydney you can go to a pub and see a top QC chatting to a paint-splattered tradie, it is a true melting pot.

If you're planning to visit then go for the 2 meat raffles on a Friday afternoon (from about 4 to 6ish) or a Sunday afternoon for the choice of roasts, if the locals haven't beaten you to it already. Long may it continue.

Oh, and if you need some work doing (PR, banking/legal advice, IT, carpentry, gardening, plastering, painting, house-building, shipwright), just ask someone, they'll point you to the right person.

The closest thing you'll get to pub food at pub prices in Balmain. The Friday night pies are excellent and huge for $14.50 with peas and mash. Roasts are also excellent. Good local atmosphere.
