Wow this is the best meal I have had for years. We used a voucher, however, this won't influence our next visit. This place had wonderful feel and is where the old Gotham bar used to be. Wonderfully presented and felt very rich. We got a few drafts from being near the door but that is the only negative.

The service was excellent and the waiters courteous, knowledgeable and efficient. The crepe to start was wonderful, however, I was very envious of my partner's cheese souffle. The souffle was quite wonderful. The uber winner of the evening was the Chateaubriand. What a wonderful piece of meat. So wonderfully cooked with pancetta surrounding it and jus to die for. The accompanying vegetables were great, green beans with a mustard sauce, fluffy mashed potato and something which has now gone to the back of my mind.

$70 for 2 which was great value considering the immense size. There was no way we were going to have dessert, however, they brought around a tray, how evil. I had a citron tart and my partner the pear tart tartin. The accompanying creme fraiche ice cream, sublime. The only issue was we were not warned they were $18. I thought this was too expensive. This did not ruin my enjoyment of the evening, however, and as wines were reasonable I was not unhappy with the price overall.

This place is most definitely worth a visit.

We used a voucher here which made this great value. Otherwise it is priced Ok but at the higher end.

Having a voucher we didn't expect a window seat but were pleasantly surprised and had a great view of the Opera House during the Vivid Festival. Great view and a nice way to spend an evening.

I have the calamari to start, thick slabs which I wasn't expecting. It was interesting and had some great crispy pancetta with it. The crab pasta was apparently also good. The lamb in a tagine was nice and had a great flavour. The kangaroo was well cooked and quite a huge piece of meat.

The wine list is reasonably priced and they gave us the benefit of the doubt over an incorrect bottle of wine being ordered which impressed me.

A nice little place. A touch popular at present so particularly crowded at the end of the week and can be difficult to find space or hear yourself speak. Friendly service and reasonably priced drinks. Great complimentary bar snacks, roasted almonds. Worth a visit.

We stopped by for dinner before a show at the Seymour Centre. They look like they've recently 'funkified' the place and made it shabby chic. Nice old pub feel in the old pub section and the beer garden was good. We didn't head upstairs to their cocktail bar (the Marmalade?). It has a good feel to it and a mixed crowd - uni students, older couples and young 30s professionals.

Friendly service but I felt a bit rushed when ordering as if I was a hindrance (done nicely however? is that possible?). The wait staff were really nice and friendly when they bought food out or cleared plates. Food selection appeared fairly good with a large pizza menu, the usual pub fare plus some nicer dishes.

I thought it was quite expensive at $19.50 for a chicken parmigiana with chips and a salad. It was good and large but not great for the price. $20 for something thrown in the fryer then covered in sauce, ham and cheese. Tasted good anyway. The marinated mushrooms as a side were large But they were cold. So disappointed on a cold night. They serve Montieths which I like.

Wow. This place great. They've converted what used to be burger joint. Wonderful food. Their special offer of 2 courses for $35 Inc a glass of wine is gold. I had the risotto to start with and the ingredients fresh and wonderful. The wage pie with bacon and eschallot, so good. We also tried the fish/seafood pie - so good. Great service. The space is ok. Great value.

We love the food here. It never misses. Our highlights are the egg net, betel leaves with trout (really good), and the tofu.

It's great space but really misses with the communal tables. It can be hard at times to enjoy when you are sitting side by side and staring at strangers.

The service was nice enough but so slow with the wine and this is usual for them. Our second glass of wine came as we were finishing our meals. It is expensive so this coupled with the communal dining makes it not as good a value proposition.

Great for a quick bite before the movies. It was a bit dead when we were thereon a Sunday night so not much atmosphere. Service is friendly and fast.

The food is great. The ramen I believe was good. I had the Nagasaki Champon and it was briliant. The tastiest soup I have had for some time. Loved it.

I'm not sure why this place gets such big mentions in the newspaper food sections. Perhaps, because it's around the corner from News Ltd in Holt St.....

Went on a Wed morning before work this week. The coffee was good. Service was good. The scrambled eggs from the menu came out looking a mess with a single piece of toast. I'm told they tasted Ok but not great. I had a chorizo omelette from the specials board and it was really lacking in flavour.

I must say the breakfast board that someone had looked brilliant and so did the poached eggs and some of the muesli "parfaits". Could be worth another try but doesn't deserve the hype I think.

We tried again and it was Ok. It's not what it used to be however. The service was Ok but really had none of the casual, friendly but professional/ efficient vibe.

The food was fine. The Moroccan breakfast was apparently good but not as good or the same size as it used to be. I had a special, prawn omelette. Nice but lacking a little flavour I think.

Coffee, I drink long blacks and love the bitter edge but expect the coffee to be smooth. I actually had to put sugar in it to make it pleasant. Bitter as hell.

Definitely gone off the boil. Somewhere else around the corner has great food and the staff and owners are so friendly they make me smile. Why would I go to Toast any more?

Apr 03, 2011 - I thought I had reviewed Toast previously but it seems not. I am a big fan normally, however, today's experience soured things a little.

I love their Eggs Benedict, and their Moroccan and Mexican breakfasts are great plus a little different. The service is usually spot on with really friendly and attentive staff. Today we sat down and waited. 10 minutes went by so we went in. The barista was curt and dismissive telling me to go back to the table that someone would be out. They weren't out so we left.

Toast I have been one of your biggest advocates. Please don't let this be the new you. I'll be back for one more try.

A total revamp of this place now sees it packed to the gills. It will be quite some time before you can easily get a table as it is the latest hot thing in Surry Hills. We got there very early and had to end up sitting upstairs as downstairs was completely packed, ridiculously so.

Excellent and friendly service. (The service was putrid with the previous management with stuck up little girls behind the bar).

An interesting menu. A bit overpriced but interesting. We had the spit roast of the day which was wagyu. I thought it had a little too much fat, however, it was delicious. The salad with figs was great and we were lucky we didn't suffer from the lack of figs the previous reviewer did. They have a lot more drinks wise on offer now also. Some good beers.

Worth a visit but be prepared to get there early, or go upstairs. They have a general pub area, a diner which is quieter and then seating upstairs with table service (same menus).

Jan 05, 2009 - Decent food and decent value. This is general pub style food and unlike some of the people below I have never had an issue. We generally go for lunch on weekends and dinner in the evenings. (I do wish they'd go back to their cheap steaks. A big mistake guys I can see how your patronage has plummeted since that stopped a few years back). Bar service can have a little attitude at times but is ok.
