I was taught to cook Indian food by Indians so I'm generally not that fussed by Indian restaurants which mostly pre-cook their 'roghan josh', 'kormas' and 'vindaloos'. Laughing Ganesha is a fabulous exception, with a Taj Hotels trained chef who produces some really nice dishes. The masala dosai is a perfect rendition of this famous South Indian dish and the other dishes vary from familiar to inspired. It's a small restaurant and can get a bit 'cosy' but for lovers of real Indian food this is a winner!

I try not to review a restaurant until I've been there a couple of times. I found Macchiato by accident a couple of weeks ago and took a friend there for a birthday lunch. We booked ahead and sat in the 'mezzanine' level.
Service was great and the food very tasty. We took our own bottle of wine and had a few glasses of theirs and the price, I guess, was a little higher than average but I was very happy. We went again yesterday and again got great service, even though the staff were clearly under the pump.
The food was really tasty and we all thought it was very good value. In summary, there's not a lot of choice at this end of town and I would recommend you try it out. Full marks to Miss Poitiers, one of the excellent waitresses, you know who you are!

This is one of those 'no nonsense' cafes, of which there are plenty in Sydney. The decor is not conducive to a romantic dinner for two, but then neither it should: it's a place for a hearty breakfast, a quick lunch or a meeting over coffee. Where Cafe Alto excels, in my opinion, is in its service. Whenever I am in Sydney I go here for lunch, or for a coffee, and I am always surprised by the genuine welcome that not only I receive but which is dished out liberally to all customers. The people here really like what they do, and it shows.

The quality of food here and the service are both very good. Its a classic old building and not necessarily what you would expect from a place that markets itself as a steak house. I was a bit wary of going here but left very impressed. I spent a pleasant hour in the basement cigar lounge, with a friend, which was an unexpected pleasure.

The food is OK but the prices are outrageously high. If you need a feed, go elsewhere. But then, I don't suppose you are going here just for the food and the ambience is pleasant enough at the end of a long week.
