I ordered the goat curry with a flaky bread roll. I expected the curry to be a bit more dense, but there were generous amount of melting meat with a plate of herbs and dipping salt. The place was clean and no weird smells. Yum. Coming back here to try more dishes.

Am also a tourist keen to check out this generous new concept. The huge curries were lovely but the okonomiyaki was tasteless and soft (there was no cabbage in there). Unfortunately the ambience affected my appetite. There was a lot of stale air, grime and incense indoors and when I moved outdoors a few aggressive pigeons flapped onto my table and tried to steal from my plate. I think I came on a bad day.

I came for lunch and spent the whole time feeling bad for the one (and only) waitress and realising that this is just another money making tourist spot.

The dumplings were cheap and good. Other than that, the vegetarian duck was pre-bought and sliced on a plate (I expected the crispy type, being a "Shanghainese" restaurant). The pumpkin dumpling sweets were cute and chewy but a bit on the oily side.

The senior staff stood by the cash register whilst scowling and pointing at all the customers that needed to be served to the one chinese girl waitress. Her english wasn't great and I bet she was working for about $10/hour. Not coming back.

I was excited to come to a restaurant with a great newspaper review and such an authentic name. I ordered the red braised pork and was sorely disappointed.
Firstly, it was the wrong cut of meat. The pork had the skin alright, but there were No layers of meat and fat. Secondly it was Not braised, simply boiled for a few minutes. Thirdly, the sauce was corn flour mixed with red dye and soy sauce. This last point was the straw that broke the camel's back.

I looked at the kitchen staffs behind the large window and felt embarrassed for them. You wouldn't even find such food at the corner "chinese take away joint", the type that "cooks for gwailos." If you can't cook Hong Shao Rou, don't put it on the menu. I ate the vegetables on top and left to find another cheaper and better joint than this.

I stumbled upon this place when I heard jazz playing upstairs. It was such a warm, bright and friendly nook tucked away from the abrasive streets of Newtown.

I was surprised by the food as well. I had a melt in your mouth steak and mushroom pie. There are cellphane wrapped books next to the tables for you to peruse. I will definitely be back again and hopefully try out their new ramen joint.

The restaurants smells like a typical restaurant from China. The waitress reprimanded me on the spot when I told her I expected the noodles to be thin. The beef was nice but I don't think I'll be going back again.

I come here nearly once a week now (not sick of it yet). Their service is efficient and portions are generous. Their ramen is good but I prefer their rice dishes. I love their katsu and especially their hirekatsu set. Always cooked to perfection and a lovely crunchy coat. I prefer this branch compared to their Galeries Victoria branch.
