Charles Pizza, Footscray

Restaurants, Pizza

Overall 7.3  9

Food  7      Ambience  8      Service  5      Value  7

Food (7): Quality ingredients used (the mushrooms were cut nicely and think on my pizza – old school style). The let down is the base: it can be very dry and overcooked sometimes. Putting the place in context of an after midnight pizza place, it's one of the better ones in Melbourne.

Ambience (8): This is one which depends on personal taste. Charlie's Pizza is like going back in time to the late 70's/early 80's right down to the wood grain counter and the velvet wallpaper. Come to Charlie's and get the real deal.

Services (5): I've only experienced the late night staff. They are polite enough, but like most reviews here say, they can come off as a little glib.

Value (7): I'll give it a 7 because you will find better pizza in Footscray during the day. Most places in the 'Scray open late. However, there not many places outside of the CBD and St. Kilda where you'll find pizza after midnight during the week (Charlie's is open until 3am!).

Finally a Mexican restaurant in Melbourne done right. Right in the middle of scenic Lygon Street, this is a Mexican lovers treat.

Food: Excellent, this isn't your standard chain Tex-Mex restaurant food that most Aussie's are used to, this is prepared with care and creativity. Full of flavor and texture, you'll never think the same way about Mexican again. (10)

Ambience: For those sick of crazy crap on the walls and being surrounded by token sombreros and ponchos, relax. The atmosphere is much more intimate with a very modern decor right on Lygon Street. My only complant would be that it does get busy. (9)

Service: Although the staff are very friendly, it does get busy. I also get the feeling that the dishes take a while to prepare. So be prepared to wait for your meal. (7)

Value: At the end of the day, yes, you will pay probably around $3 to $5 more a meal. But to honest Mexican is usually over priced anyway. Having said that, it's really not that much more than you'll pay at a suburban restaurant, but the quality of the food will be ten times better. The drinks are pretty standard city restaurant prices.

Overall, if you love Mexican, this will raise the bar for you. (9)

Al Porto Vecchio, Williamstown

I've been coming here for a while now. The food is delicious and well prepared, but is it too much to ask for the basic table service? I mean, the staff are friendly enough but there's an obvious lack of training in table waiting. Long waits - even if it's not busy, dirty plates left on tables (from previous peoples meals), even the simple act of laying the cutlery out was botched (we all had to pass it down to each other after it was all unceremoniously plonked down in a heap at the end of the table a whole five minutes after our meals had already been served).

Food: For the price, the food has always been consistently good and (as you'll read in most of the reviews), is the reason people keep coming back. Be prepared for large servings. (7)

Ambience: Williamstown has a nice feel about it anyway. It's like St Kilda without the tread police. The inside of the restaurant is warm and cozy feeling, but the back area could use a serious make over. (6)

Service: As I stated above, this is where it loses big points. The problem is not with the staff being rude (in fact when you do get served, they are very pleasant), it's just that they're all young (between 16 - 20) and all seem like they're not getting sufficient training or supervision. The management really need to address this as judging by the other reviews on here, it's an issue a lot of customers have picked up on and it's bad word of mouth no restaurant needs. (3)

Value: Yes, this place is very reasonably priced. Good for a family on a budget. (8)

Overall, this could be a real hidden gem for the west. They have real potential to make this place a great place to eat out. Again, they need tighten up their practices and maybe spruce up the back garden.

Food: Mexicali Rose is no worse or no better than the average independent restaurant. Not bad, just not very creative. (6)

Ambience: Not as gawdy as the average Taco Bill. But still plenty of "viva la revolution" paraphernalia around you. (7)

Service: Biggest disappointment. I have been twice and both times have waited way too long for my meal. On the second time it was over an hour after our entree until we saw our meal, which we didn't get until I approached the counter and asked what was going on. It wasn't even a busy night either and after I complained our meal just "appeared" only moments later. (2)

Value: I'll be honest, it's not bad but there are much better places in Melbourne for the prices they charge. (5)

This place is a real time capsule. Opened in 1979, it doesn't look as if much has changed since 1986.

Food: For the price (which is good), the food is surprisingly good. The selection of dips is excellent, but be prepared for large portions. (8)

Ambience: Kitschy honey pine wood panels the walls, dirty old menu pictures from the 1970's - this is old school Melbourne at it's best. (10 or 3 depending on your sensibilities).

Service: Can be up and down. Sometimes you can be waiting a while for somebody to take your order. Also if you want some of the more "exotic" items on the menu, be prepared for them not to be on that night (I've been going here for years and have found this to be consistent). (6)

Value: Hey, it's Turkish, it's cheap. Plus it's open till very late most nights. (8)

Excellent. The best burrito's in Melbourne hands down. They'll even tailor a burrito to, however, you like (provided they have the ingredients). Plenty of options for vegetarians as well (for a change). Highly recommend.
