Yes, I agree with the other reviewers - Post-Mao is great! Sure, some dishes aren't truly Hunanese, but you just need to avoid the Aussie-Chinese items on the menu.

I bet Kasim's a great local takeaway, the food is excellent, the owners are really nice, the prices are very reasonable. But it'd be great if they could do something about the decor - it's like a David Lynch movie! Some music would be really nice too.

The cakes and pastries at Hausfrau are wonderful and the owners are fabulous. But we've had bad experiences with very too-cool-for-school people working here. Recently I was at the register, ordering cakes, and some local celebrity came in and I was suddenly completely forgotten about.

The new Station's great! I have to say the old menu was amazing - Portuguese/Brazilian but sadly no-one knew about it. So I feel sorry for the old management and chef - you're special, just think about marketing and decor ...
Anyhow the ambience in the Station is great. Friendly. Different house wine every time I go and $5 for a generous glass!

First, I have to say I had a great breakfast here. Very speedy. Good coffee, perfect spinach, excellent hollandaise - so they can really cook. (Just better bread - not from the supermarket - would be a plus.)
What was unsettling was the service. The two people on the floor were fighting, disagreeing about orders, telling each other off - all in front of customers. While the woman ran around trying to serve people, looking angry, the guy watched the cricket or schmoozed with his favourite customers. A chef even had to come out to clear tables. Then the couple ended up cuddling behind the bar! Not a relaxing experience.

Yu Palace is a classic nostalgic suburban Chinese restaurant, with white tablecloths, red serviettes and Chinese lanterns. And the food is great. The owner/waiter is warm and charming, and he went to special effort to adjust the music and lighting to our taste. Our bill for three courses for two people came to $27.50. Highly recommended.

Interesting to see the comments about the tense atmosphere at Hako. My first memory of Hako, in the old location, was being asked to hurry up and leave because it was busy. A bad start! I've been a few times since with groups of friends, and sometimes the food has been really good - but one staff member always seems to be in a bad mood which affects the whole environment.

Panda House is a classic suburban Chinese. It's still a homely, caring, family-run experience. Thank God they haven't renovated a la Chopping Block - long live the Panda mural and the easy-listening radio! However, they "must" get rid of the terrible plastic placemats with photographs of fruit etc - just depressing.
And maybe consider "one" dish that makes the restaurant different - the "Panda House stuffed beancurd", or "Panda House dumplings", for example? With the fundamentals so sound, one unique and exciting dish would get people travelling from all over the Western suburbs.

Eccentric, great interior. The food is *terrific* because it's not too try hard, good quality nuts and antipasto. How good is that with a glass of wine! But while some may find the straight-from-1950s-Hollywood-and-braces-wearing staff and the drinks list with chapters and page numbers sexy and sophisticated, I personally found it a little ... how can you say it nicely ... ridiculous?

Great yum cha! But 'vegetarian-friendly'? There are only three vegetarian main dishes on the menu, two virtually identical (stir-fried mixed vegetables, one with beancurd, one without). Some more thought here would be great.
