I understand that the restaurant area was originally part of the Ballaarat Club (which still occupies the top floor) and it’s a lovely space. The immediate vicinity is quiet, but it's only a short walk from the main street (Sturt Street). We greatly enjoyed our dinner, particularly the mains (one of us had the duck and the other the lamb), but the entrées and desserts were great, too.

Good choice of wines, and very helpful and knowledgeable service. Prices were in line with what you would expect for this quality.

Stag, The, Port Fairy

Port Fairy has a number of "fine dining" restaurants (with prices to match), one of which is The Stag. However, early dining is apparently the norm, so when we arrived for our 7.15 pm booking, we were amongst the last to arrive at a nearly-full restaurant and hence we ended up with a long wait for both our entrees and our mains.

Our rolls arrived fairly quickly, but it was a choice of soy and linseed or nothing! There some highs and lows with the food. The dishes all certainly displayed the signs of careful and thoughtful preparation, and the calamari entree was said to be very good, but I had mixed feelings about my "spring vegetable" salad: it looked pretty, and I'm sure the various little bits and pieces were prepared and arranged on the plate with great care, and the dressing was good. But it wasn't what you'd call "substantial". My flathead was good, but the duck was served pretty rare, which really isn't our preference (is it just us?).

On the other hand, the steak was cooked in line with our request, and was said to be good.

L'Edera has a nice bar area and a spacious dining room. The menu offers an interesting range of Italian dishes, said to take advantage of local produce. My gnocchi was good, as was the seafood special which consisted of harpuka accompanied by a whole range of other seafood (a crab, mussels, pippis and so on) - very impressive. The service was fine, but the prices are up-market in keeping with the menu and ambience.

Interesting Italian menu. We especially enjoyed the spicy pepper and celery soup, and I liked the gnocchi formaggi. I'm told the spaghetti marinara was good, too. The tables aren't large but although we were there on a busy night, we didn't feel too crowded.

We opted for the 4 course "Sofra", and weren't disappointed. On the night we were there, this gave us a number of mezzas, two main courses (salmon in vine leaves, accompanied by date mousse, and slow-cooked lamb) and Turkish delight sundae.

Having regard to some of the previous reviews, I wondered about the staff, but they were very good, good-humoured, attentive and responsive to queries. One of them mentioned that she hadn't been there long, so, perhaps, there have been changes in this area?

Tables are fairly close together, but no more so than many other places, and once we got talking, this didn't concern us. Note that you can BYO wine.

La Camera, Southbank

The typical Italian menu couldn't be described as adventurous, but our meals were both fine and the serves were generous. Service was attentive even though we were there on a busy Saturday night. The tables towards the front looked nice, but we hadn't booked and ended up with a table at the back of the room. Prices of both food and drinks are quite reasonable, having regard to the Southbank location.

July 2012: We revisited La Camera for a weekday lunch. The special deals are pretty good value, although it was a challenge to attract the wait-staff's attention when had a query after our mains arrived.

Rossini is a well-established Malvern institution, and can be busy even when other restaurants nearby are quite quiet. It's status as such is definitely reflected in the prices! The front room, although quite congested, has a good atmosphere, but the back room is very ordinary. Nevertheless, this doesn't seem to deter the Malvern-ites.

The food is reliable with a good choice of pastas and pizzas plus the usual Italian mains. On one visit, we had the salmon with pesto and roasted vegetables and the gnocchi with four cheeses sauce (very rich!). On another occasion, we had a vegetarian pizza and the vegetarian lasagna. All these offerings were good, and the serves were generous, too.

The service is pretty slick. The wine list is adequate, but as with the food menu, it's on the pricey side for what you get, so take advantage of the ability to BYO.

Chez Olivier, Prahran

Restaurants, French, Good For Groups, Bistro/Brasserie, Good Wine List

Overall 7.3  12

Walking in off Greville St, Prahran, you might be in a Parisian Bistro. The wait-staff all look and sound French, the decor is appropriate and menu certainly has all the classics. However, in spite of the fact that the reviews are mostly pretty good, we felt that this restaurant fell short in some respects.

The wait staff seemed to have been selected for their ability to speak French rather than do the job, the wine was amateurishly poured and was spilt, there was some minor confusion over one aspect of our orders, our routine allergy issue seemed to cause confusion, the refill of water didn't arrive and the coffees turned up over an extended interval. Perhaps, we just encountered a night when there were some relatively new staff?

My French onion soup was fine, but there were some grumbles about the bisque (too thin?). A comment was made about one of the duck dishes to the effect that it could have been cooked a little less, and about another that it could have been cooked a little more.

On the other hand, my seafood gratin was fine, and there seemed to be no complaints about the steak from the other end of the table. The side serve of beans was a little light on for what we paid, although the mains had generous portions. The food and wine prices were in line with what you expect to pay these days. The wine list had a good selection, including French wines, at various price points.

Given the location, when friends suggested we eat here, we had visions of a pizza establishment. But we were pleasantly surprised because it's much more than this. My gnocchi was excellent, and I'm told the other pasta dishes were good, too. The service was friendly and efficient, and the prices reasonable.

The food here is described as “Modern Italian”, and we were impressed. We shared some primi dishes, and followed this by mains such as the suckling lamb, the hapuku and the steak. I think every member of our group was satisfied. The service was very good, the room is pleasant and the wine list offered a reasonable range. But this quality doesn’t come cheaply!
