I had lunch with three other friends, all of us who haven't been back for years. What happened here? So much has changed for the worse. Where is Dom and Carl?
Such a beautiful location and such history. Such a shame.

Maybe I went on a wrong day but I don't get it.

It had been recommended by my city dwelling friend and as a lover of japanese food I had to go. The service was good and the ambience was Ok. My partner and I ordered few dishes and they were mostly fresh and tasty but not to an extent of recommending it to a no-local friends to go and eat. Japanese is such a hard cuisine to be great with, I know.

I somehow convinced my partner and went in to this restaurant because I was still reminiscing about another good restaurant that too had a charcoal BBQ going on at the front. I could see myself eating silly as I love BBQ. But instead, my partner was beating me silly when we finished. They could do so much with the charcoal BBQ. I think I chose the wrong night, I'm gonna give them a another go.

The mixed meat platter I had was so big that you could almost re-construct a whole new animal out of it. The taste was good as expected, Charcoally, BBQy... It was nice to see the actual BBQ process on the grill placed near the entrance. The cabbage salad was exactly the same as the one's my friend's mum makes - Good. I will go back when I have finished digesting my meat platter.

How many times have I been deflated by restaurants who say they offer genuine Sichuan cuisine yet dish me up some disappointingly toned down version. Red Chilli however so blantly ignore the the word moderation and do not spare you the joyful burning sensation of chilli madness as if to prove me wrong. Damn authentic Sichuan!

By the way don't believe the waiter who says 'It's just little bit spicy' to every dish you ask 'How hot is this one?' I swear I saw him smile when I asked for my 3rd beer with tears in my eyes.

This restaurant is one of the very few that managed the gastronomical longevity with its integrity still intact and without losing any flare. Mathew's was cool in the 80's and I think it's still great in 2011.

Any of their dish with Prawn in it makes me still salivate at the thought of it. Duck is also superb! Mathew's wines are well selected to suit the cuisine and all waiters are uncannily talented at matching the wines with the meal!

Mathew, I didn't see you there but I hope you are well, my ol'friend.

When one is bold enough to name one's restaurant simply 'Meat & Wine Co.' they are trying to tell you something. Well, I made a mistake of not listening to such instinct and got adventurous with non-steak menus. Don't!

Happy end to this story is that I decided to skip the dessert and ordered and got wonderful steak! Actually, come to think of it, it's not an entirely happy ending since I spent far far more $$ than I should have...

It was a busy night so service was a bit slow but staff were always polite. I just wished they were polite enough to pay for the card bill that will come end of this month! Take a tourist friends/relatives who will think you took them to a really swanky joint.

Sake has created a dining place that finally and properly broke down the barriers between entree/main, east/west, fine-dine/casual! Definitely recommendable!

I went back to this restaurant after a long absence from the local gastronomic scene, and yet again I find the same great food and atmosphere that made me their ardent fan ever since my first visit in the 90's.

Mouth watering dips, succulent lamb, basic but flavoursome pasta. Hey, even their bread seems to taste better than any other place, even though I know they probably just buy them.

But most of all, this place has a character, kind of place where the last name of those old guys eating on the corner table is Coleone and the large family that are celebrating the birthday in the middle row probably always celebrated their birthdays here, always.

I wish I lived in the city.
