This place was a really nice surprise for Saturday lunch. The menu was very good, it was hard to choose what to have. I had the venison pie which was lovely (minor criticism about the fact that it was a 'pot pie' and wasn't labelled that way, and the couple of bits of connective tissue) and my dining partner had the kangaroo which was cooked perfectly and presented beautifully.
The ambience was good, except for the issues with the wood fire filling the dining room with smoke. One of the young waiters tried his best to sort it out and was quite apologetic. The service was generally good, perhaps, a little bit slow, they brought the wrong wine but sorted it out fairly quickly so nothing to complain about but also nothing to rave about.
The prices seemed fair for the quality of food, will definitely head out to Lanyon Cafe again, probably a good place to take visitors to Canberra.

We had the kaisen set. The steak and the morton bay bugs were exceptional, I'd happily go back and order just those things. Everything else was nice enough although we were a bit disappointed with the rubbery prawns.
We went on a Thursday night, when we arrived there was no one else in the restaurant, they sat us to the side of one hot plate. It took more than half an hour for them to take our order and bring the wine, then another 15 minutes to start cooking. Between drink service and the start of cooking three more people came into the restaurant. For some unknown reason they sat these three people directly in front of the hot plate, around the corner from us. That was really a bit uncomfortable.
Once the cooking started the food came very quickly, maybe even a little bit too quickly as things got cold before we got a chance to eat them all. The chef was lovely and very helpful when we asked him to recommend a sake.
Would visit again but not in a hurry, probably on a weekend so that hopefully there is a better ambience.

Have only eaten here for yum cha. The food is most pleasing, as good as the high end yum cha in other capital cities. The steamed pork buns are very good, lobster dumplings are a must have and so are the custard buns.
Very nicely set out restaurant for yum cha, the service is pretty good although there are a few waiters that could be more helpful. It's quite expensive as far as yum cha goes, however, the quality largely makes up for that.

Pretty dismal place really. The service was shocking, we didn't get menus for half an hour, and then it took another half hour for them to bring us mixed bread. The anchovy bread was a large slice of italian bread, with half an anchovy on it. Very disappointing. The mains were all ok, but not amazing.
The place was so noisy that you had to shout at the person sitting across from you, and it just wasn't worth trying to have a conversation with someone seated diagonally opposite. Don't think we'll be back here.

The service was outstanding. Every effort was made to accommodate us when booking late. The restaurant was very busy, however, there was appropriate noise control so it wasn't that much of a problem.
The food was pretty good, we ordered banquet for 4. The duck pancakes being prepared at the table was really pleasing to see. Some things were a little bit too greasy (unfortunately, the shantung lamb), however, the flavours were pretty good. Will most likely visit again.

The food has been going slowly downhill and so has the service. Even when there are only 3 other small tables you can expect to wait an hour or more for your food. The food used to be fresh and well cooked, however, that has seriously slipped over the last 12 months, great shame for a place that has the potential to be really good.

It's straight out of 1972 but that gives it some charm. Not the most amazing vietnamese food in town but always fresh and priced appropriately. If you go in winter take a jumper.

It's worth going here just for the coconut custard, really an amazing dessert even though it sounds so simple. The food is pretty tasty, the restaurant is clean and tables are spaced well enough apart, the service is attentive. It is, perhaps, a bit over priced for what you get but, perhaps, that is explained by demand. Definitely book if you want to go there on Friday or Saturday night.

Have been here twice. First time at the end of 2008 was absolutely amazing and probably the best dining experience I have ever had. The second time in May 2010 was not up to the standard of the 2008 experience especially in terms of service. When you are paying fine dining prices you shouldn't be expected to tell the waiter who has ordered what and you shouldn't have to wait more than a few minutes for your wine to be re-filled. It was also very disappointing that our drinks order was messed up every time.
There were some issues with the food too. I ordered the rabbit special and, unfortunately, pulled out two long, thin and very sharp bones and 3 large pieces of cartilage. When I politely showed them to the waiter there was absolutely no apology, all she said was 'I'll tell the chef'. Most of the other food was good, in particular the tomato four ways and the cheese course.
Will give this restaurant another go, and hopefully do the degustation.
