Wow this place is absolutely woeful. I was dragged here by a friend who had heard that it was one of the better thai restaurants in Melbourne. If nothing else this place should be commended on its ability to generate that sort of hype, because the food, service and value for money are absolutely terrible.
We ordered 3 mains, rice, 6 spring rolls, and one round of drinks. We walked out 150 dollars poorer. The rice was perhaps 3 soup spoons worth, the currys were poor with very few fresh ingredients in them. They were more like a soup which you couldn't even eat because you didn't have enough rice to mop it up.
You can easily get a more substantial better quality meal at virtually any other thai restaurant in melbourne for a third of the cost. Seriously save your money and go anywhere else.

Nara thai is one of two thai restaurants in Laverton. It's about 100 meters from our regular thai, Fresh Chilli. We thought we'd give it a go based on the incredibly high ratings we read here. Its actually scored higher than Fresh Chilli.
Unfortunately our experience was awful. It started off poorly when we had to step over discarded hyperdermic needles to enter the restaurant. The food was appalling. The green curry chicken tasted like it had come out of a can, The pad kra prao had very little flavour other than salt, and the pad kee mao noodle dish was a noodle sludge. Even the rice was poorly done and came out more like a rice pudding. The service however was incredibly friendly but thats not enough to assist this review unfortunately. My suggestion would be to forget about Nara Thai and walk the extra 100 meters to Fresh Chilli. Their prices may be 40 cents extra per meal but you'll be getting a far superior meal.

Unfortunately the Hobson bay hotel seems to change management/chefs every few months so this review is only valid for my last visit. Earlier visits were excellent, the staff were great and the food was spectacular for pub food. My last visit however wasn't great. The lunch menu shrunk drastically, there were no more specials which were always a winner. There was only one item on the menu I could even be bothered ordering which turned out to be a massive failure. It was a steak sandwich which seemed to be filled with cold left over veggies from other meals.it was incredibly bad. So if you're going to check this place out I hope you get them when they're doing well. Because when they're on song it's an excellent place to eat.

Fresh chilli is our regular Thai. We usually go with takeaway because the place is always packed, it is worth eating in though. The staff are really friendly and well presented, and the restaurant is really nicely furnished. Don't let the dingy surrounding shops scare you away. The food is the best we've found in the area, I would suggest sticking with the stir fries as the noodle dishes aren't spectacular.

I've taken my wife to this restaurant several times. We've never experienced any of the negatives mentioned in some of the other reviews. Their food has always been delicious. They have the best tandoori chicken I've tasted. Every curry we've had there has been spot on. The staff have always been incredibly friendly. The only negative I could mention would be that the heat levels of their vindaloo varies greatly, so every now and then you'll get one which will require you to lead line your digestive tract to digest.
