Whenever I have overseas visitors or clients in town, I make sure I take them here. It's better than harbour views because it's so relaxing and magical to people who are not familiar with Sydney. Too often the harbour restaurants cause you to feel like a tourist even when you're not, whereas this place evokes a wonderful feeling of intimacy.

The waitstaff are a great bunch and what I like about the food is it's creative, not just the same formula too often trotted out around Sydney. Their choice of wines is second to none also, doesn't matter what I've had, it's always delighted my companions.

When I want a big serve of great-tasting Italian food to impress my clients who are all pretty blokey (mining industry) this is the place I take them. No-one has ever had the slightest complaint, and in fact my clients usually ask to be taken back here. If you have a table full of blokes in ties, you can relax as long as half of them have ordered the veal, it means you'll get the deal done. Massive wine list as well and for those who can squeeze dessert in, the tiramisu and creme brulee finish everyone off. And for those who don't know Bill the owner, if he's ever a bit difficult, that's his sense of humour - just give him flack back, he loves it!

Fern Food & Drink, The, Redfern

Very glad I discovered The Fern, the food is always plated up really well for a casual cafe and the big outdoor area is great to sit and have a 2nd or even 3rd coffee. Smoked pork belly is simply to die for and the general rancheros style is cool. Word is spreading fast that this is one of Sydney's best cafes.

Great spot for an outdoor sunset cocktail, lovely location. Great tapas too, but prices a bit too "Sydney" for some friends I've taken there. Doesn't bother me as long as the food and service is spot on, which has been the case for me, so I'll keep going back when visiting my hometown.

Overall the food has been good on the half-dozen times I've been, and the service is prompt. However, that's the best I can say about the service. When it comes to the human touch the best I can say about the female staff is they're all well versed in empty, false smiles that suggest they can't wait to get away from you, while the men are adept at the silent, surly food thrust.

But for somewhere to go late at night, full points to them for being open until the wee hours, so many other Sydney restaurants have counted the cash and got the hell out of there.

A great little Sydney cafe, I've been going here since it first opened though sadly less now that I'm living over the bridge. Waiting staff are always cool both in style but also in disposition, baristas are always first-class, and the food gets a 10 from me not just because it tastes great but because it is so damned original. If only other Sydney cafes were willing to be so exotic instead of following mainstream formulas that make me yawn.

I've been to La Ricetta many times over 5 or 6 years of living in the inner west, the chef Duncan does a great job of pumping out a lot of quality Italian food as the place is almost always packed, which is a sure sign that they're doing Italian food well and the prices are fair. As much as I generally dislike eating cute bunny rabbits, their braised farm rabbit is incredibly good, it's the only restaurant where I ever eat that animal. Their risottos are always fantastic.
