This is a good place to go in a group. The mezes were really nice, and the waitress went to some efforts to satisfy spinach pie cravings (they had run out) so she found some cheese ones. Had the roast lamb and roast chicken for mains (shared platters) which were really good, but the calamari was a real let down as it was very battered and the chips were soggy and greasy.
We had plenty of food and if we had ordered more mains (there were 8 of us) we wouldn't have been able to eat it. It also would have been very expensive! It was $90 for 2 excluding drinks but including tip, think that is about average for a restaurant these days. Overall, recommended!

I've given the food high points because I agree with most other reviewers here it is very competitively priced. My grip is with the service staff - the head chef is always really nice, but the others are very ungracious, and we have now stopped going there with children. Their loss really because we used to go there in groups and wouldn't spend less than $300 each time. I don't understand people who have a kids's menu but then get shirty because the place is popular with families. And I might add we are always careful to make sure our children don't scream or run around. Upstairs is noisy because its all wood and bare walls, so maybe look at having a dedicated early dinner and then kid free from 8 pm - just a thought!

If you have children then its really the only place around where they can have a meal and you can have a glass of decent wine. There is definitely a gap in the market in the inner west for childfriendly venues that don't cost a bomb- the Five Dock RSL and this place are probably the only two that are genuine in their desire to accomodate families. That being said, I think its very good value for the kids meals, the wine available from the bar is good, but the adult food leaves a lot to be desired. The western style food is consistently burnt or greasy, and the Asian food has several times given me really bad stomach trouble. I now don't eat there, just go there in groups when we have children. I guess there is no incentive to improve because they are always packed but seems like they are missing out on a potential goldmine.

First up its nice to see something a bit different in Newtown, and value wise I think this place is very reasonable. $200 for four including 2 bottles of wine is very good when you consder that even in a Newtown pub these days you won't get much change from a $30 main.
Anyway, the good: the snapper was cooked beautifully, nice crispy skin, firm flesh. The mash, excellent. Bread, very nice. The bouillabaisse was a let down though, very soapy taste, no depth behind it, the chorizo while tasty was really a garlic sausage, not a chorizo style at all. Chips only soso and very small bottles of tap water that really only gave us two glasses, and the waiter had to keep replenishing.
All in all not too bad but hopefully be better in a few months when the kitchen irons out the bugs.

They just need to get over themselves really. Its overpriced for what it is, its a wine bar on a busy inner west street. I have been here twice, both times I had mid-priced wine which I would say verged on the undrinkable. The expensive wine we had was very nice but it was $75 a bottle so it would want to be.
The food is fine, nothing to complain about, but servings are very small. Both times I felt there was a bit of "upselling" going on from the waitress and it wouldn't hurt to crack a smile. That said, the manager is very nice and has a good manner, but the waitress who looks after the big groups needs an attitude adjustment.
I think you would be better off going to Gigis, or Lindas or even 2042. It will be interesting to see if they can sustain the high level of interest once the new restaurant at the Union Hotel opens. Won't be going back.

This is really a cafe but with restaurant prices. Really not good value at all. Food was ok, wine was excellent. Didn't really like being in and out of a tapas place in a bit over an hour, all the items brought to the table at once, would have been nice to enjoy a glass of wine with olives before moving on to the heartier fare. And come on guys, bottled olives in the salad?

Love this place! Service is spot on, very helpful about recommendations, heat of spices etc. Good variety to the menu, as the food as the standard Thai favourites as well as those little special somethings - crab rolls are divine, as are the betel leaves. Lunchtime they do the cheap set meal, while dinner is a little bit pricier, but well worth it. Its BYO as well which is always a good thing!
Response from Management:
Hi Marluk
Thank you for your comment and feedback, really appreciate your time and compliments.
We are very happy that you enjoyed the food and the service, and you enjoyed some of our specials. We try to bring out specials when new ingredients comes into season, but some of the specials have become so popular, they have stayed on the special board permanently.
As you mentioned lunch special, we cater to university student and staff, and people work at the local business for a quick meal. On the other hand, for dinner, we focus on full service, but at the same time, keep our price as competitive as possible.
We look forward to seeing you again soon.
Kind regards,
Atom

Dear oh dear! Maybe because it was Christmas/New Year but the last dining experience at Funky was awful! I agree I've had some really good meals here so was quite happy to go there for a quick pre-movie dinner. Basically the service was slow, the food inedible (bland, deep fried whitebait fritters anyone) and not good value at all! Shame, looks like it has fallen victim to the King St curse of complacency.

Not fantastic, but not bad either. Service is very sweet and attentive, and it was nice to linger over the meal, sometimes Japanase can be over very quickly. The pork belly pancake was probably the standout, though the base was doughy. One of those meals that presentation was not a feature. I think there are probably better Japanese out there.

Seriously, if you can come here just to sit in the garden and have a drink, then great. I personally find the staff rude and think it is very overpriced for what is on offer. I've had to send food back because it tasted rancid, and last time the nachos was stale. They also had the nerve to charge for the very small bread rolls, but I notice they have given that up now. Seriously, don't bother, a real shame because its one of the few places in Newtown with a great beer garden!
