There are about five Vietnamese Restaurants in a row along this stretch of Illawarra Road all serving tasty, inexpensive food. Most of these restaurants are the bright lights and formica tabletop type of soup kitchens.
However, if you want Vietnamese in a stylish atmosphere with a young and enthusiastic team serving modern, authentic Vietnamese food, then this is definitely somewhere you should try. The decor is vibrant yet comfortable, this is somewhere you can relax and take your time over dinner with a date or a group of friends.
We were made very welcome and the staff member was very happy to help with our menu selection and explain Vietnamese customs. The food was fresh and delicious and we will certainly be going back again very soon.

It was wonderful to revisit Yen for Viet tonight and introduce my family to the restaurant. The 8 year old grandson was thrilled with the spring rolls with vermicelli and vegetables, the rest of the family very happy with the (amongst other dishes) tamarind fish, salt and pepper squid, prawn pancake and to finish the creme caramel. Such a feed for 4 healthy appetites under $100. We'll be back again and congratulations to Yen and the rest of the family for succeeding in a tough market! Great to see you again Yen!

Terrific fresh food here with good portions. Very tasty fish cakes, soft shell crab and papaya salad and the sauces all have a nice bite to them. The service is a little shy but competent and the decor is very pleasant. The value is very good. Visited again and was again impressed by the value here. The portions are very large, the presentation fantastic, decor wonderful, service was great. Terrific to see the chef and his team working together harmoniously. We are making an effort to visit more frequently. Well done!

The warm glow of the wall colours in this new restaurant have been beckoning me in for a couple of weeks now and I am so glad we finally went to visit.
The food here is lovely. We can't fault the flavour, presentation and value of the food here. We enjoyed the salt and pepper squid and the barramundi curry. This is a very comfortable space with a kitchen run by a very competent chef formerly of Blue Ginger at Balmain. With Let's Eat just across the road and Yen for Viet further along towards Marrickville Road, this end of Illawarra Road is becoming quite interesting again! Good luck to this new venture.

Took the family here last night on the strength of the reviews here and last week's taste of the famous Ginger Beer which is the stuff of my childhood!
After quite a wait, we received four times our desired entree due to a misunderstanding with the vivacious young waitress! We ordered one mixed entree platter for four people and received 4 entrees, all the same, this entree was a meal on its own! Some very unusual items and also very tasty eg the plaintain and chicken wings.
The mains then took rather a while to arrive as there is only one chef and the waitress doubles as the kitchenhand. We loved the flavour of the food, the beef and black-eyed beans was good and the seafood stew was very yummy. There are lovely spice combinations that we haven't tasted before and we enjoyed trying some new things.
The restaurant itself is clean and bright and the service was very pleasant. Whilst we were not blown away by this experience we would consider returning to try some of the other dishes on the menu that sound so interesting and healthy!

We found 'Let's Eat' through this forum and the association with 'Spice I Am' caused us to be quite excited. We continue to be excited on each visit.
The first time four people enjoyed the fish cakes and curry puffs, green chicken curry, crispy pork with basil and chilli, rice with basil, chilli and crab and the special of prawns and green apple salad. For me the crispy pork dish and the prawn salad were the standouts. All for $20 per head plus service with a smile, something that is hard to come by in this little stretch of Illawarra Road.
On a subsequent visits we have ordered several dishes from the specials board eg. the prawn and green mango salad, chilli crab, several different barramundi dishes, the sago and young coconut dessert and a standout juice of lime and mint.
The interior decor is pleasantly minimalist but there is not much atmosphere. Prepared tables and a few lit candles would make the room far more attractive and welcoming.
The entrees are good, however, they are mostly deep fried and it would be nice to see a few fresh entrees on the specials board. I'd like to encourage all locals to give this place a go. I wish the owners well and hope that with the help of this forum we can increase their customer base. 'Let's Eat' has fast become our favourite local Thai restaurant and we continue to visit regularly.
March 2010 - Fabulous specials on the weekends and what a difference the tea lights on each table make! How busy Let's Eat is becoming a tribute to their hardwork and attention to their customers. Congratulations!

November 2007 - We found Atom Thai because of a half price offer in the Newtown Festival newsletter. What a find, we have been back every couple of weeks since and taken friends and family. Every meal has been a great success. Atom is passionate about his dishes and welcomes feedback. Service and value, can't be faulted.
April 2008 - My husband and I dine at Atom, on average every fortnight, sometimes alone and often with friends and we have never experienced anything other than sensational food and fantastic service.
September 2009 - Nearly two years after our first visit to Atom Thai and it is still our favourite Thai restaurant in Sydney. The standard of the food has been maintained to a very high consistent level.
Response from Management:
Julie, thank you so much for your review and continuous support and patronage, we have enjoyed your friendship. Thanks again and look forward seeing you more.
Cheers,
Atom

We enjoyed a terrific meal here tonight. I had the tagliatelli with veal ragout and my husband the snapper and mushroom pie, both fantastic and very tasty, also very filling so not possible to sample the desserts. The upstairs terrace looks amazing for parties. The staff and owner were very friendly, informative and professional. We will certainly be going back.

We finally went back to La Mint after intending to go for over a year. It was a great success as we took some friends from the US. They were very impressed and intend to rave to everyone they know about the restaurant. Food was very well presented, particularly the mixed entree platter, very tasty, particularly the Shaking Beef and beans and the chocolate desserts were perfect. Hospitality very good also and the waitstaff that looked after us were lovely especially the Swiss waitress, this is the standard we like to experience!

We popped in late last night only wanting a small meal. The service, atmosphere and food all fantastic and we will be back to sample more when we have more time. I'm glad we ventured in even though there was nobody in the street front part of the restaurant. A special note of thanks to the lovely waitresses.
