Va Tutto, Ivanhoe, VIC    Add to list
Modern Australian, Seafood, Italian Restaurant

Good food but typical me-too modern Australian at over-inflated prices. The service is excellent if you are disabled, but I can unfold a napkin and pour my own wine and would prefer not to have hovering waiters in my face every two minutes. Ditto the glaring, bell-ringing head chef. One gets the feeling the northern suburbs are desperate for "fine dining" restaurants to lighten their wallets. All in all, over-rated.

This well-known tourist stop at the Arthurs Seat lookout is all about position. The restaurant has fabulous views right across both bays and the peninsula to the city. The food doesn't match the panorama unfortunately, but is reasonable if unsurprising. Jazz bands play on weekends.

Pleasant winery restaurant in a converted shed overlooking the vines and fields, just up in the hills from Shoreham. Menu is straightforward, steak, salmon, curry, risotto, fish and chips etc, but done with style. Keep an eye out for the two course lunch specials, which are great value. A pleasant dining experience, but I didn't have a lot of success with the wine I chose, an immature drop with overtones of lighter fluid at inflated prices. It would pay to try the tasting room before sitting down to dine.

Merricks General Store, Merricks, VIC    Add to list

Something of a Peninsula institution, the old general store is now a fashionable cafe and cellar door for three local wineries. Very popular on weekends in the cavernous dining hall at back, it serves a number of taste treats, most good but not all successful, for around $15-16 on average. Small serves means you'll have to order a number of dishes for a decent feed but this allows a sampling of the menu for a group.

Pleasant spot, OK value and good food, even if the dishes aren't as fancy as their pretentious descriptions on the menu (bring a French foodie dictionary to decipher, even the waitress had troubles).

Sosta Cucina, North Melbourne, VIC    Add to list
Italian Restaurant

Our request for pepper received an astonishment because we were told, the chef's dishes are perfectly seasoned. Too bad the food didn't measure up to the pretentions of this stuffy little place. Tiny serves on huge plates required a number of side dishes, making it an expensive outing for rather ordinary food. Crab pasta was dominated by breadcrumbs and parsley, with no hint of seafood, while my partner's dish was swimming in oil.

Well-presented is about the best you can say of this vaguely Italian bistro, though the menu is more try-hard contemporary (but not succeeding) typical of many peers. Fussy service detracted rather than enhanced an overpriced, not-to-be-repeated dining experience.

Fantastic position right on the beach, good service, prices OK for an expensive part of the world ... if only the food was better. This place is noted for its fish and chips, so maybe should have stuck to that, but the pizzas were bland, ditto the risotto.

Menu had modern Italian promise but failed to deliver. The usual big plate, small tower (more a pimple) of food was overpriced for the tiny servings. The sauce and overall flavour of the veal dish was quite good but the meat tough, while the risotto was insipid, and the tiramisu a poor example. No problems with the service, but the serves are just mean. Disappointing.

Portsea Hotel, Portsea, VIC    Add to list
International Pub

This classic pub is a Portsea institution right on the foreshore. The cavernous dining area at back overlooks the pier and beach, and tables on the verandah or lawn are just the spot on a fine day. Food is a little pricey but a definite class above your usual pub fare, with an excellent seafood selection and a wide choice of other dishes. Packed to the gunwhales over the summer holidays, when it can be hard to get a table, at other times this grand seaside hotel has a more genteel atmosphere.

Booked for five on a Wednesday night, and got a shock to find we were the only ones in this cavernous restaurant. Apprehension turned to delight when the food arrived. We shared different platters, so tried a wide selection from the menu, and the food was fresh, excellent and classic Lebanese. Still can't work out why it was empty, but maybe Sat nights are to go when belly dancers strut their stuff.

This is one of my favourite Greek restaurants in Melbourne, and one of the most reasonably priced in the "Little Greece" strip of Swan Street, though prices are moderate rather than cheap. Top food, great platters and attentive service in this small restaurant (but there are tables upstairs). Deservedly popular and hard to get bookings on a Sat night.
