Visited on a Saturday night after a two year hiatus (brought about by a disappointingly overcooked eye fillet). A last minute booking was graciously accommodated. The waiter (mildly overworked) was calm, omnipresent and pleasant. The signature entree (crab cakes with ginger syrup) were moist and delicate although they swam in a little too much syrup, which, having regard to the angle of the street-side table, formed into a little reservoir at one end of my plate. My partner's quail with porcini mushroom cream entree was outstanding (the better of two entrees).
For mains, the rabbit, chicken and white bean cassolette was tender but more soupy than expected. A special comprising beef cheeks with potato mash was one of the better I've tried. The rocket with parmesan and pear salad as a side was a crisp and pleasing accompaniment (with the baffling exception of being strewn with some leafless twigs).
The meals were so filling that desserts seemed simply out of the question (although the chocolate fondant with stout ice-cream sounded particularly alluring).
And it's BYO with a modest corkage charge. I can forgive the past transgression, am ready to try the eye fillet once again and think now that this is, perhaps, one of the better options in the neighbourhood.

This is a quirky and endearing place with a menu that ranges from the generic (wonderfully executed) to the daring, think starfruit, raspberry and white chocolate muffins or the Mexican breakfast, jalapeno peppers, coriander and scrambled eggs wrapped in a tortilla and served with avocado, sour cream and tomato salsa.
True, some of the more extreme dishes do not always work (I can’t quite bring myself to enjoy a marshmallow and peanut butter muffin, though I guess there is a market for that sort of thing), but it’s never a boring place to dine. It is a bit disappointing that there is no all-day breakfast but the lunch menu is varied enough to compensate and the salad compositions can be as original as the muffins, my personal favourite is the lamb with black sesame, mixed seeds, mushrooms and brown rice.
The staff are super friendly, though it can be a bit of an intimidating place for the non-regular (though that can be rectified in fairly short order). Overall, one of my favourite and consistently gratifying places but, for the love of god, change that music!
