Can't understand why this little gem hasn't had an Eatability review for 15 months. Trecked to Fairfield last Tuesday with some inner-west buddies, it took forever but the Hume Highway is very charming at this time of year. Song Fang Khong is small, the staff are extremely kind and friendly and the food is fantastic.

We ordered Lao specialties, sticky rice, Lao Som Tam, fried dried beef and Lao pork sausage. The Som Tam [ordered medium heat] is more pungent than the Thai style and goes perfectly with the nutty sticky rice, as does the crispy dried beef. But the sausage was the killer, juicy, packed with flavour and neatly sliced in rounds.

The best Lao food I've had in Sydney. It cost about $8 each, we left an average tip and the blushing waitress tried to give it back!

I rate Ploy Thai as the best value "real' Thai in Sydney. I've been a Ploy fan since its Haymarket days... stumbled in for lunch one rainy day and couldn't believe my luck. The new locale on Parramatta Rd is pretty basic, but you're there for the food.

Must tries are the Duck Soup, Spicy Pork, Omelette, Sator [sour beans with minced prawn/chicken], Nam Tok [beef], Drunk Noodles, Broccoli with crispy pork. They do northern Thai [I-san] as well, with a bit of notice they'll do sticky rice etc. The husband and wife team are warm and hospitable. And if you spend more than $20 pp you're just being greedy.
