Overview
Elegant in its décor, innovative in its food and attentive in its service, Zilver opens after a $3 million makeover from its former identity as Silver Springs restaurant on the corner of Pitt Street and Hay Street, next to Capitol Theatre.
As you approach the restaurant, a linear taupe stone concierge greets you as you walk past a gallery of oriental silverware lining the path to the main dining room. A small sleek bar with low back lounge chairs acts as a waiting area for guests on a crowded night.
Stone-cladded fish tanks display live fresh seafood and a wall, with modern timber lattice screens lining one side of the walls and reflective mirrors lining the other side. Bronze mosaic pillars create textural contrast, accented by imported lotus-shaped crystal chandeliers suspended from the ceiling.
Custom-made upholstered silk chairs in copper tones complement latte tone tablecloths and pure white china, elegant glassware and hand-tooled cutlery specially sourced from China.
This place so far is my favourite yum cha eatery in Sydney. They have so much more variety in terms of dishes and their servings are more than enough. The prices may have gone up however, it's reasonable and worth it. They are constantly busy but they are still attentive to all customers to make sure that everyone is getting what they want. After their huge renovation some months or years now, the place looks great. They definitely put a bench mark for all other yum cha places.
Best Yum Cha I've had, really fresh food and innovative menu. A step above other Yum Cha restaurants. Although very busy I still found the service good, staff were friendly and helpful and there was plenty of food. I'm looking forward to my next Yum Cha lunch!
Best yum cha in Australia!! I've been here on countless occasions, now that I'm not based in Sydney anymore every chance I get I will definitely be here. Service compared to other yum cha restaurants can't compare!!! ask for the mayo wasabi sauce when trying one of their fried seafood dishes!! So many different creations and varieties.. compliments to the chef!!!
We went here for a work lunch. We had Yum Cha and the food was fantastic. The service was not. We had somebody with us that spoke cantonese so the rest of us got ignored. Whenever we asked for anything we got a funny look and they turned straight to this other person and asked them.
They also kept squeezing between myself (8 mths pregnant) and another lady to put the food on the table and we only got an excuse me about 5% of the time - Very Rude!
I'm a Zilver zealot. Being a Sydney sider of only 18 months standing, it's a feat to have been to the same restaurant 6 times. The dimsum is always excellent. The variety and freshness never disappoints. Yes, there will always be the issue of the ticket girl at the front but somehow, it all works.
We actually had Christmas lunch there. Our parents were well satisfied in having a 'proper Chinese' and therefore good valued meal rather than facing the prospect of a western style buffet at one of the hotels. We had Peking duck, a lobster noodle dish and dimsum, something for everyone and all surprisingly good for public holday service.
I was a little turned off after waiting an hour and a half for a table after been told the line would only be 30 minutes. I would not recommend this place for families with children. My one year old waited for the 1.5 hours and no seats were available for him inside. Staff stated they had no high chairs left, perhaps they need to buy some more.
Service was non existent and we constantly had to ask for service. We had to ask for cutlery, chopsticks, drinks, something to eat and even the bill! The pork buns were delicious as was the vegetables and pork. However, some of the dishes arrived cold or luke warm. Great egg custard tarts. This restaurant would be great if they just sorted out professional service and no massive long waits for a table.
We went here with a group of friends just over a week ago for yum cha. I think service was probably the worst thing. We got there, and there would have been around 100 people waiting in a queue - something I really hate, especially when they don't take bookings. Thankfully, we were able to get a seat a little while later.
But the place was packed, and once we were allowed in, our friends and us were wandering around trying to find our table because there wasn't actually one available to seat our nos. Eventually they ended up just cramming a couple of tables together up on this dodgy little stage. There was 10 of us crammed together at a round table and a square table mushed together. It was a little uncomfortable, and the staff weren't apologetic or anything. They were really kinda rude, but I think I've come to expect that from Chinese places in general.
Food: it was ok, kinda just your usual yum cha sort of food but thankfully, it didn't end up being as expensive as I first thought it might be. The place is really large and it wasn't really as nice as it gets made out to be on the website.
Our friends are having their wedding reception here in a few months, so we'll be back for that but I don't think I'd choose to go back. I think there are more pleasant yum cha places out there.
