Nice cocktails, food takes too long though and is too expensive for what it is. Nice atmosphere, staff could be a lot friendlier. Head straight upstairs and avoid the squishy sticky carpet downstairs.
Only had drinks here and danced a bit with my friend, no food, but the atmosphere was pretty good, fun people, good music, will definitely go back there again.
Tapas, tapas, tapas you gotta try it, the kafta is to die for and the mixed stand is unreal value. Monteiths is the nicest tap beer in Sydney (bloody kiwis) and the managers certainly know their stuff. Can't wait till summer to kick back on the gorgeous rooftop.
I've got to second what others have said about the rooftop. Pure summer pleasure.
The kitchen has just come under new management and the food is really good value and the tapas was great.
Just booked a group function for 30 on the rooftop and service was so attentive, as soon as the first drops of water came out of the sky the staff were there to take out tapas stands that we were still eating down to the 1st floor lounge for us to carry on.
Looks like they have some pretty nice cocktails which I'll be going back shrotly to try.
Nice place, love the rooftop bar on a sunny afternoon or summer night, great view! Decent wine and cocktail list, love their daquiris! Haven't tried the food so can't comment but definitely worth a visit if you can snag a rooftop table.
The rooftop garden makes for an excellent chilled sunny avo, and the funky two floors are great to carry on the evenings session with plenty of cocktails to choose from...as for the food,( the staff informed me the bistro is under new management and in keeping with Newtowns increasing standards for tasty food the selection was divine...). Definitely well worth trying out, seriously good tapas!
My friends have raved about this place and I must say that I was so disappointed! My food was cold, my partner ordered the steak medium rare, it was more than well done. I had a side of Egyptian spiced potatoes, the potatoes weren't cooked properly and were hard in the middle. Disgusting!! I would never ever ever go back there again. I think they forgot about us or put in a half baked effort.
This place is fantastic! Get there early to secure a spot on the roof terrace - it has great views over the roofs of newtown and on a balmy evening is just perfect. My four friends and I had the Mixed Stand and Vegetarian stand which didn't take long to arrive and was more than enough for four people. For under $20 a head you can't ask for better value. Maybe if we were a group of four hungry guys then we might have needed a side dish, but for us four girls it was great. Bar staff a bit slow - only one on for quite a while when there were about half the tables filled, then when another was put on they were having a conversation with each other before serving us. We were asked if we wanted anything else from the bar but the suggestion was that it was time to move on. I can understand this as the roof is a popular spot and we didn't mind doing so, but seeing they don't take bookings for this area I thought it was a little strange - in a regular bar this wouldn't happen.
We love this place. So many people have been pleased to have discoverd it through us. Can't believe the staff have been said to be surly. Been very pleasant to us. The food is exquisite, plenty of it too. Great garden room at the top. Find it hard to beat anywhere. Below is fabulous on cooler nights in the lounge. Great unobtrusive music. It's our default place. ie we go there because we know it's no risk. Ignore the criticisers... they've got it well wrong.
Always thought this place looked really skanky but friends convinced us to go to the rooftop bar the other night. Was pleasantly suprised. The cocktails were great (although not cheap) and the ambience was really relaxed. Being outside on a warm night whilst sipping on a well made Cosmopolitan is always a good thing! Shared the 3 tiered Meze plate/s with friends. Really good value, the selections were delicious (dips, bread, olives, grilled calamari, grilled chicken and beef, falaffel) - it all went well with the cocktails. We shared amongst 3 of us and it was just enough food - felt satisfied but not stuffed! Came to about $10 each for food which was great. Would recommend sharing between 2 if you were particularly hungry.
Whilst I still think the rest of the place is a bit tacky, Im a convert to the rooftop bar and will be going back. The bar staff were friendly and efficient and the cocktails were made quickly (no standing around like some other places)
Zanzibar rooftop is a good choice for a balmy Sydney summer evening - a bit of Marrakesh in Newtown.
