Here's what the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide 2010 says about Zaaffran: “... a menu as diverse and colourful as the subcontinent itself ... favourites include enormous lamb shanks in an intriguing sauce of red wine and pureed apricots, and a panoply of aromatics, served with mushroom naan. Service is a sea of smiles and politeness from waiters...worth seeking out...”
The Darling Harbour views are a bonus. http://www.zaaffran.com/Great-Indian-Cuisine-in-Sydney-s-Darling-Harbour.html
There should be a sign at Zaaffran’s entrance saying: 'Please leave your preconceptions of Indian food at the door'. Only then could one truly understand the magic of Zaaffran.
Lonely Planet says it the best: "Zaaffran will change the way you think about Indian food.."

Zaaffran! Authentic Indian food in Sydney! When people recommended this place, I really thought they were joking.
It wasn’t too long before we arrived in Sydney from India and were already scouting for good Indian food. We tried a few other restaurants and take outs, but they were never as good as back at home. Most of them tasted like they were cooked to meet western standards. So with this experience, we didn’t expect too much from Zaaffran.
We booked well in advance to snare a window table overlooking Darling Harbor. We were greeted by the manager himself and escorted to our table. This was a pleasant surprise because I had never experienced this level of hospitality anywhere in an Indian restaurant. Both the menu and beverage list offered very unique items. Despite being a Tuesday, the restaurant was filling up fast.
We enjoyed watching the reflection of the setting sun over the beautiful Darling Harbor. At twilight it was a sight to behold the heavenly shades of nightfall, which were then replaced by the reflection of city skyline lights in the shimmering waters.
Although we're Indian, the waiter needed to explain many unfamiliar dishes from various Indian regions and she advised us to try the ‘Silver Platter’ which was a specialty under the 'Grand' Feast. And grand it did turn out to be!
First came the entree of mixed seafood which was not only good to eat but was also a visual treat. Next, we were each presented with five tasting mains on individual Silver Platters. Believe me when I say this, we had never seen anything that grand in any Indian restaurant. The waiter told us that this type of cuisine was only served in a handful of Six-star places in India and we had to agree. The grand feast is the best way to experience food from different corners of India with all their individual visual and taste sensations.
We enjoyed almost all the entrees and mains, in particular the seafood and the lamb shanks, with the meat falling off the bone. However, we thought that the lamb in the other curry should have been more tender. I didn’t enjoy the mushroom naan either. These were the only 2 blemishes which prevented me giving a food score of 10. The dessert though was fantastic.
Zaaffran broadened my view of Indian restaurants outside India. I found the most authentic Indian food infused with a modern touch. It definitely scores in service and presentation. One last piece of advice to all would be, please make a booking if you wish to enjoy this culinary explosion of Indian spices because it is by far the busiest Indian restaurants I have ever seen.

Has to be one of the best Indian Restaurants going around. If you love meat, try the lamb, it practically falls off the bone in front of you! I loved the stuffed mushrooms and the chicken biriyani too. If you are new to Indian or just a regular eater of Indian food wanting to guarantee a great food experience with a city view to match, come to this place. I have been here three times now and have always felt very welcomed by the staff there.

"During my brief Visit to Sydney. Zaaffran Indian Restaurant where royalty comes to eat" is their motto, the service is unquestionably very good, and you do feel like royalty because of it. Zaaffran is a restaurant that everyone should try out at least once. My friend told me about it and I went for lunch, and the buffet was inexpensive and delicious. The restaurant itself is a small, cozy place with cute view and lighting.
The food (especially the Chicken Biryani) was fresh and sizzling, with the plate leaving a trail of seasoned aromas behind it. The hostess is atentive and helpful with her recommendations of spicy or mild dishes (all of which were
awesome).
Lastly, the bathroom was extremely clean, the cleanest I've ever seen in an Asian restaurant. For me, the bathroom is really the critical point. If the staff can take the time to clean out the bathroom, it suggests their service and food is worth a try. I experienced eating at Zaaffran earlier this week, and I must say, I definitely did not regret the experience. Go try Zaaffran!

A family of six celebrating our 3 year old's birthday, we had an extremely bad and bitter experience. The waiter brought two naans less than were ordered. We patiently awaited for them and thrice the waiter went to check on them. So much so, that we had finished eating our food.
Of course, one of us did not have enough to eat as we had not received our naans! Then, finally, the waiter again checked, and informed us, that the chef said that all the naans had been served, and there is nothing that can be done now. There was neither any remorse nor any apology by the staff for our such pathetic treatment, not near expected from any decent and sophisticated restaurant.
Response from Management:
Most complainants prefer to blast away at the management online after the event, when they could have easily addressed the issue on the spot, so that the matter could have been corrected there and then.
However, you actually told us about your complaint when you dined last week and the manager came to your table to discuss the matter. Even though our Head Chef as well as the waiter had confirmed that all the ordered naans had in fact been served, we still offered to serve additional ones at no cost but you declined the offer.
You said no to our offer of additional free naans because you said that your children were restless and that you had to go. Thereupon, we offered to not only serve free naans, but even free ice cream to quiet the children, but this offer was also not accepted.
On a large table, when many people are sharing the food, one or two diners may feel left out and subsequently complain that the food was not delivered as ordered. Although we were 100% certain that the naans had indeed been served, we still took the naans off the bill as you did not want additional portions served (at no cost).
You have only given your own version of events, without a mention of how we tried to redress the situation. We apologized several times at the table and then again when you came to the counter to pay your bill. At that time you had stated that everything was fine so we are now saddened to see your complaint in print.
To show our own good will, we would still like to express once more our apologies for your experience. On your next visit, we offer you not only the free naans, but even more freebies, plus more profuse apologies.

A couple of weeks ago my family dined at Zaaffran to celebrate my birthday. All the arrangements had been conducted by phone and email with two of the Zaaffran staff (Rush and Monica) who were exceptionally helpful with advice and expertise on selecting a banquet menu that would suit our budget and the allergy requirements of one of our party.
Seating arrangements by the window were also taken into consideration so we could all take advantage of the view, a factor given most of the guests were from out of town. It was great to be able to personalise the banquet, choosing a menu that suited our tastes, allowing the group to focus on enjoying itself rather go through the interminable discussion deciding what to eat.
From the moment we arrived and were seated, everything flowed smoothly due to the attentiveness of the staff, with the added touch of individually printed coloured menus commemorating my 60th birthday celebration.
The food was divine and seemed to be a modern interpretation of some well known Indian favourites heightened by the Zaaffran signature treatment. It was difficult to decide on a favourite, a toss up between the Crusted Snapper fillets in a tomato, coconut, coriander and curry leaf sauce or the Lamb Cutlets tandoor smoked in spices. The rose, lychee and pistachio ice cream was a delicious ending to a faultless dining experience from inception to completion.

Excellent food and wine, we left full and very impressed. Was a little bit pricey but didn't leave feeling disappointed or ripped off like many of the other restaurants at Darling Harbour.
