Here's what the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide 2010 says about Zaaffran: “... a menu as diverse and colourful as the subcontinent itself ... favourites include enormous lamb shanks in an intriguing sauce of red wine and pureed apricots, and a panoply of aromatics, served with mushroom naan. Service is a sea of smiles and politeness from waiters...worth seeking out...”
The Darling Harbour views are a bonus. http://www.zaaffran.com/Great-Indian-Cuisine-in-Sydney-s-Darling-Harbour.html
There should be a sign at Zaaffran’s entrance saying: 'Please leave your preconceptions of Indian food at the door'. Only then could one truly understand the magic of Zaaffran.
Lonely Planet says it the best: "Zaaffran will change the way you think about Indian food.."

I'll get it to the point. I'm planning for my son's first birthday dinner on this Saturday (24.04.10) for family and friends of around 35+. I kept my options opened and walked around Darling Harbour and talked to 5 different restaurants for booking. It's my only son's first birthday so I'm prepared to spend (all the parents out there would understand me on this).
I walked across the Darling Harbour and saw the sign "Zaaffran". It was on first floor so me and my wife went up. The restaurant was closed at the time but staffs came out asking me how can they help. I let them know what I was after and they invited me inside. After a minute wait I was greeted by the manager and he was helpful, friendly and professional compared to other restaurants I've been half an hour ago. Took us around inside the lovely restaurant, went through different menus of dinner and beverages but never a moment of forced sale.
They got a lot of bookings for the weekend already but after I explained him the reason of my dinner he promised that he'll try all of us to get to next to the windows looking into the harbour. There's going to be fireworks on the night so I really want the best possible seating for us. I decided to go ahead and book it and went back again today to make the initial deposit for booking and decided to try out one last thing before I actually book, "the food".
I honestly can't complain the quality of the food or the service for our lunch. So much flavour and well balanced dishes without the kicks of the spiciness. And I got the seats that I want too. I'm so much looking forward to this coming weekend and will definitely update how it's been after the dinner but frankly I've no doubt that all of us will be having a great time. A wonderful birthday dinner I can tell my son when he's old enough to appreciate finer things in life.

The food was very delicious. I love exotic food. The curries were full of flavour, spice, and colour. I had a seafood curry and my boyfriend had a beef curry with rice and naan bread. It felt like I was in India!
The let down for the restaurant is that the whole restaurant needed some cultural touches. The walls were bare and needed some paintings or statues to add more to the atmosphere. The price was alright for the rice, bread and drinks, but the main was too overpriced. I know it tasted wonderful but the price doesn't justify it. A small bowl of beef curry, although tasty, cost $30.
Probably they gave a small amount because it was quite spicy, but if that's the case they should have made it less expensive. The staff were kind, but were too quiet and showed a lack of enthusiasm in their work. This was my first experience at an Indian restaurant, but I wasn't disheartened to avoid other Indian restaurants in the future.

Been here twice now and both times walked out happy. They have a fantastic view over the Harbour and there are usually fireworks in the Harbour on weekends.
I'm vegan and love that they have a special vegan menu not to mention the usual meat/vegetarian menu! The staff were very helpful and our food arrived quickly even on a busy night.
Delicious food, but very spicy so you have to enjoy spicy food! It's abit pricey but great for special occasions and the view over Darling Harbour is fabulous!

Booked here for a saturday which obviously is a busy night. To start with service was a little slow, eventually we had to ask to put our orders in after waiting about 30 minutes. From there everything was ok. Entrees were really good! We had the salmon and the chicken tikka.
For the mains we shared a seafood, lamb, chicken and beef. All were good besides the lamb being very dry. But we must say for the price you pay the portions are quite small. Naan was also dry. Overall it could be much better, but it was good and you really do pay for the location.

Wow. Took the Eatability coupon in and was treated like a queen. The food and the service were outstanding. The Beef Vindaloo and Cauliflower main are to die for. Feel like I got so much for my money, 5 star service for a 2 star price, if you go, take 3 people and do the $48 banquet, tons of food and 2 bottles of wine. Life doesn't get much better than that.

I really love this place. I have been here more than once which means I do like it (I can't say that about too many restaurants). We are vegetarians and non-drinkers but here they have a great vegetarian range and also a great non-alcoholic drink range.
The flavours of the food and drinks are what I'd call aromatic. It is all quite delish! The lentil dish was the best I have had and the mango lassi was superb. Can't wait to go again and order the vegetarian banquet. The outlook is also great with the lights of Darling Harbour. Can't praise this place enough and would recommend it to anyone who likes aromatic, uniquely flavoured Indian food with a twist.
The service was also wonderful, prompt and very helpful. We'll definitely be back.

This restaurant indeed has quite some interesting dishes to choose from. The flavors are a nice mixture of western and authentic Indian foods. We also had quite some extensive vegetarian options available. I agree that the service staff can be over-attentive at times, which is not always helpful when you are trying to have a private conversation. As a minus, on valentine's day last year we ordered the special valentine's menu, and although we were promised that my husband's menu (he is vegetarian and I am not) was confirmed, it turned out there was a mix up. Fair enough, it was busy, but I didn't get the my rose either (which was part of the menu booking package). :(. It was overly packed in the place that day and the staff was spread thin. Not such a good spot for romantic occasions thus, but a very nice place for a casual dinner anyhow.
