Here's what the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide 2010 says about Zaaffran: “... a menu as diverse and colourful as the subcontinent itself ... favourites include enormous lamb shanks in an intriguing sauce of red wine and pureed apricots, and a panoply of aromatics, served with mushroom naan. Service is a sea of smiles and politeness from waiters...worth seeking out...”
The Darling Harbour views are a bonus. http://www.zaaffran.com/Great-Indian-Cuisine-in-Sydney-s-Darling-Harbour.html
There should be a sign at Zaaffran’s entrance saying: 'Please leave your preconceptions of Indian food at the door'. Only then could one truly understand the magic of Zaaffran.
Lonely Planet says it the best: "Zaaffran will change the way you think about Indian food.."
Close to monorail and tram. Only 10 minutes from Town Hall. Discount parking nearby. View details on Eatability page.

I have been visiting Zaffran ever since I arrived in Sydney two years back, especially on any major events like birthdays or anniversaries. But I have found that their service is awful and repeatedly so. We last went in October and vowed never to revisit.
The food arrived quite late and the starters and mains were all served at the same time and we were told to order for any further items that we may need since the kitchen closes at 10 and they cannot take orders after 9.30 pm and this is after we arrived at the restaurant at 7.30.
The major reason for frequenting this restaurant had always been its location overlooking the darling harbour. Both the food and the service at this place have always been despicable and is now hitting rock bottom.

What a surprise. I like my indian food but the food here is simply fantastic. There is more of a UK type influence here as there are dishes here you would not normally find in an indian restaurant.
I had the lamb shanks, I can't stop thinking about how the meat just fell off the bone. And the chicken tikka was so tender! Even the naan was amazing. We had a nice table on the balcony overlooking the water. Great spot. Atmosphere was let down a little by the cheap feeling tables and chairs. Service was okay, with the waiters appearing to be students that were trying hard. Will definitely go back though, for the food.
If the decor is updated and the service improved, this could be a truly great restaurant.

Went to dine with a large group of friends to Zaafran's. Have to say the view was great, and the food reasonable, though probably not worth the price. What was really annoying is that higher minimum spend charges per person exist when booking in a large group and be warned, Check your bill at the end of the night. An "Open Food" (who knows what that is?) item of $20 was added to our bill in the hopes that none of us would check it and would just pay it. Dodgy.
To top it all off the senior staff then started standing over all of us when we questioned it and made it clear he wanted us to leave soon. Wouldn't ever come back.

We dined her for lunch outside of our routine, as we have never been to an Indian restaurant other than for dinner. All through our meal, we were the only obviously non-Indian heritage diners, which we soon realised was quite reassuring.
We had a mixed entree, which for an additional $4.50 a head we added prawn and salmon. We loved it. For mains we tried something that we have never had with this cuisine before, beef ribs along with the lobster curry. Both superb, with the beef incredibly tender and flavoursome. However, but a warning! Check what comes with the dishes, the beef ribs came with naan bread as part of the meal, and the lobster came with string hoppers.
We had ordered a serving of rice, which luckily we were able to put a halt on when we saw the size of the mains! The spicing with all our meals was intense, but at the same time superbly delicate whilst complex. Only drawbacks were the service can be best described as 'homely', whilst the winelist is a little pedestrian but hey, who cares, we were rapt with the food we were treated with.
Great views, with the restaurant and most importantly the restrooms being sparkling clean. We'll go here again for sure.

Was pretty good. Pretty nice setting. Nice fresh food. Overpriced - yes but I'd only go on an occasion because it was nice and classy. Don't go if you just want to eat a quick indian meal. You need to go to enjoy the setting and the view.

My wife and I came here a few months ago but didn't booked in advance. Luckily, we only had to wait for 10 minutes. The setup is quite nice and if I had booked earlier, I might be able to get a seat with view of Darling Harbour. Definitely a good place to have a romantic dinner.
For mains, we had briyani rice and beef ribs. The briyani rice was cooked in a pastry, which makes it look really special compared to the usual briyani rice. The taste was really good. The beef ribs were fantastic, really tender. We would recommend both dishes.
For dessert, we had Symphony of 3, which is a combination of rose kulfi, mango kulfi and pistachio ice cream. The mango kulfi stood out of the 3, but overall, nice dessert.
I would definitely come back again.

Terrible. Typical of the kind of tourist trap occupying this side of Darling Harbour. I've had better Indian from food courts in Sydney.

Exceeded our expectations! We had a Spreets voucher that was about to expire and booked the last minute, the staff were very accommodating and attentive.
I have never been a fan of Indian cuisine, after reading rave reviews of this place I had to go!
The food was fresh and cooked with the utmost care, everything was explained to us as it came out. My absolute favorite would have to be the potato corn patties, they simply melted in your mouth.
The place was dimly lit and very much seemed like a place you would go for a romantic dinner, the wine was poured for us (other places leave this tedious task to ourselves).
Staff were friendly and as I mentioned very attentive, they made sure we were well looked after. Definitely value for money with our vouchers, however, I would truly consider coming here again and recommending it to others.
