Staff were not weird or rude just from a different culture. Food was great, beautiful cuts of meat and flavours were fantastic. Does get a bit smokey if you sit with a BBQ as there is no immediate exhaust but the food was worth it. Would be suited to a group of 4 best, we had 6 and it was a bit of a stretch to reach the BBQ. Tempura was very nice! Still highly recommend would go back!

The kitchen staff is weird and pretty rude but waitress are so nice! I love Gyu-Tan and pretty much all meet for Yakiniku here! Only this place has really good liver Sashimi in Sydney for sure!

After reading numerous reviews, I had high expectations of this restaurant. However, I was quite disappointed in a number of areas. I ordered the Edamame, Sashimi, Tempura vegetables and Teriyaki chicken.
The Edamame was obviously from frozen soyabean pods, the Sashimi was nice, but very thickly cut.
The Tempura vegetables were thickly cut, fried in oil that wasn't hot enough, lacked colour or crispness, and because the kitchen staff lumped the pieces of tempura together, they all became a greasy mess.
The Teriyaki chicken was nice, but not spectacular. In terms of ambience, there was very little, it was white, sterile, with a couple of pictures stuck on the wall.
Authentic Japanese kitchen staff it might have been but the experience was significant cuts below what my expectations of even a reasonable Japanese restaurant should be.

Fantastic meat quality being served. Wagyu Beef Curry is highly recommended. It is by far one of the best in Sydney. The dish definitely has the authentic Japanese taste to it! A must try for any Jap cuisine lover.

Yakiniku Wakana is the best Japanese place in Sydney. Bookings should be made, however, as this place can fill up quickly! The food is fresh and delicious, however, be warned, you cannot stray from the menu, we have fondly named the owner 'the sushi nazi' due to this fact. But why would you want to stray from what is on offer?
Cash only, no eftpos. Super fast efficient service "thank you for waiting..." the food starts rolling out pretty much as soon as you've ordered. When you've waited all of 1 minute. We love this place with a passion and tell everyone to go there.

Good variety of food and unpretentious. Clean ambience and friendly staff. Ginger pork dish was very tender and one of the best I've eaten in Sydney, good texture in the salmon belly sashimi as well. Value wise you can't go wrong either. Would definitely return for the bbq as they ran out of seats for grilling so either book or get there early.

Love it here, lived in Japan for many years and this is the authentic "yakiniku", much better than any of the korean place in Eastwood. Tacoyaki really brought back memories of Japan, Natsukashi! After my son got into Artarmon school we spent the two years he was there coming here at least once a month. Five atars from us, love by all my friends and family, adults and kids.

Don't be misled by the understated interior, the food here is good and fresh and the value is good. I actually haven't had the yakiniku, but their other dishes are always prepared well and the service is attentive. A nice local restaurant.

The low service rating is due to the place being a cash only establishment and in this day and age that is a big no no for customer service. So apart from the food being quite good here I will definitely think twice about returning. We had salted tongue, ginger pork (the best flavour) and the premium wagyu and a kimchee fried rice and a dessert of three ice creams (the black sesame) was terrific.

They serve you very good quality meat for table bbq. Each dish is not cheap but kinda big n' very tasty, so I think very valuable. Service is ok but, when my friend order large steamed rice, stuff says "No we only have small portion" thats not rude but she was inflexible. I thought.
