Have been here a few times (and at the Chatswood sister branch) and I really like it. Popular so you might be in for a bit of a wait for a table. There's quite a lot to choose from and I like the touch screen ordering system, there's pretty much no way they can get your order wrong and it's nice to be able to order whenever you want.
The salmon sashimi roulette (with the wasabi ball hidden in one) is fun. The soft-shell crab is nicely crunchy. The salads are large and refreshing. The wafu pizza is hot and lovely with the melted cheese, an interesting taste with a thin crust.
The service is pretty good although it does feel as though they are quite rushed and busy all the time. Atmosphere is pleasant in the booths. Will be back again.
As a Japanese food lover I became a regular at Wagaya! I love the cool ambience, the way we can order from the screen and the receptionist is always very helpful and kind. On the other hand, waitress staff are not helpful at all, thats a shame they can't understand if you make any question, last time took me ages to get my diet coke with bourbon. I think its worth a visit definitely but the owner must be more careful when hiring staff.
I and a group of friends have been regulars at Wagaya for the last 1 year. Unfortunately, the service, presentation and quality of food continues to deteriorate and fairly rapidly too over the last few months. One thing that has always been of concern to us is the poor cutlery presentation. It is a turn off when the food gets served on plates and in bowls that are chipped with pieces broken off them.
Almost every second plate/bowl is like this with chips/pieces broken off. This really does not look good at any dinner let along a birthday or special occasion celebration. The kitchen staff obviously need to be more careful of the way in which the cutlery is handled. I never find this problem at other restaurants. Given the fairly high pieces there should be no way it is served up in cutlery of such poor quality/presentation.
The menu pictures are also not always an accurate reflection of what ends up being served. The rainbow roll is an example, the picture clearly shows no mayonnaise on the rolls yet it is served up with mayonnasie on it. The restaurant would benefit from updating their food pictures or at least adding a brief description about it.
Wagaya have also cut back recently with the size of servings yet the prices are the same and higher. The soft drinks use to be served in cans which was good. Now they serve the soft drinks in standard glasses but fill the glasses up soo much with ice that there is only a few sips of soft drink in the glass yet the price is $3.20!
Last night we were served a soft drink piled so high with ice that it had only a 3cm section of actual drink in it. We complained to the waiter about this who then served us a soft drink without ice but we were still charged for both, total of $6.40 for just over 1 standard glass of soft drink. We did request the waiter to see if one of these soft drink charges could be removed, however, he failed to get back to us with an answer so we ended up paying for both!
Best to request minimal or no ice in the soft drinks or avoid them totally as another problem with them is since they stopped serving soft drink cans all of the soft drinks are flat in taste, not bubbly at all like they should be.
If Wagaya can fix up all of the above they will see the return of many customers as the restaurant has a very good atmosphere. Until then we won't be dining there again as it is pretty bad if they can't even get the cutlery presentation right let alone the food!
Well worth a visit, went as a large group (with 2 hyper youngesters) and sat it a 'booth'. Touch screen ordering system was efficient, food arrived quickly and while acceptable, was not outstanding. Certainly enjoyed the atmosphere, families can even book a 'room' so kids have a little more room. Would visit again.
Went on a Monday night with parents after finishing Uni night class. Got there at 8 pm and we got a table straight away which was lucky since we've been trying to get a table for the past few Monday nights to try out the place but were told to wait 20 minutes.
Was my first time there. Touch screen is really good considering its so busy. Food came within 10 minutes. Ordered a sushi and sashimi platter and a hot pot with ramen ordered on the side.
Overall, it was good food but a tad on the pricey side, its a place I wouldn't go often compared to Takumi with the $2.80 for every dish on the conveyor belt and others that can be ordered off the menu, ($2.50 if you're a student) in Haymarket. I don't think I'll be coming back to Wagaya for a while.
Sound absorption was terrible at the place, extremely noisy. The prices were not too bad, however, the portions given were terribly small and taste was just mediocre. Nothing special. I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone.
I went here for the second time this weekend and was so disappointed! The servings were much smaller than what was on the screen, measly in fact! The "recommended" pizza was awful. My own fault really for ordering a pizza in a Japanese place but it was "Japanese style" after all, who knew it would come with mayo and a sticky rice ball?!
The food was really average too. Best thing was the soft shell crab salad and sushi rolls. Skip the yakitori, grilled pork skewers and the prawn and scallop sticks though, crap sticks is what they should call em!
We booked it a week beforehand for a birthday party. Service was horribly poor even though orders are taken through a menu, they were very rude and rushed. They also ruined a birthday cake surprise for my sister and kept interfering during photos. Not a good place to go to as a large group. Go between 2-4 persons.
The service here was fast and efficient as the food arrived within 10 minutes of ordering it on the touch screen. The only negative comment I can make is that our waiter knocked a chicken piece off one of our dishes onto our table, picked it up and put it back onto the plate. Not very hygienic.
Food quality was average. Soft shell crab salad came out with two pieces of crab. The colour of the deep fried chicken did not look too attractive. The salmon on the salmon skewers was not fresh and it had been overcooked. Tatanaki balls weren't very nice maybe because the only other ones I've tried elsewhere were excellent. Wagyu beef was average too, however, the mushrooms on the dish had too much butter on them.
The only dish I thought was above average was the recommended sushi plate. This was the standout of the night. The bill was just over $30/pp. Not happy paying this price for the quality of food we received. Wagaya is definitely not a place I'd go out of my way to come back to.
