Delicious and fresh, the coolest thing about this place is that it is the first Japanese restaurant in Sydney with the touch-screen menu. Bad thing is if you get the 6 pm slot they kick you out by their 8 pm slot. Some restaurants are flexible, this one definitely isn't.
Food - a very good selection of Japanese, and fusion, all selectable off a touch screen, if only you could surf the net while eating (but hey, that would be rude, wouldn't it?). The range is from nibbles to sushi/sashimi, grills, hot pots (they were popular tonight - winter), rice/noodles and even salads.
Ambience - hey ho - you're in Tokyo. Couldn't see Bill Murray at any of the tables, but I'm sure Suntory is available at the bar. Wooden benches and little booths, if you're lucky. No bookings or, if they're full, you have to wait - we spent time (45 minutes) doing some shopping at IGA in Market City across the road.
Ambience would have been way up there but for the presence on our table of a live (at least it wasn't dead and in the food, but alas, didn't sing nor dance) cockroach. A little off putting nevertheless. Being a bit lazy, we didn't bother to iphone pic it, and report them to NSW Health AUthority.
Service - once the food is ordered, it comes out pretty quickly. In some instances, not too soon after the order has been "touch screen-ed". The only downside is you have to get the wait staff to come by to explain any dishes that the picture or description doesn't do justice to.
Value - we paid $75 for three, although we did pig out a little with 3 mains and some sides.
Food was ok and sure you can get it in most of the Japanese style restaurant in Sydney. Service was good and the most important thing is the way you order! Without those touch screens I think it will not be so popular.
I love the concept of this place, how fast the food comes out and of course the dizzying choices of food and cocktails on the menu. Although, unfortunately, some cocktails I tried tasted more like herbal medicine, and despite this it did not deter me from wanting to try the rest.
The food is of an izkaya style (small plates) which means especially between a group of ppl, it can be great fun ordering a range of choices off the menu. With larger groups, a private room can be booked, which I highly recommend, its like entering a small japanese room where you take off your shoes and sit around a large square table.
The food in general is very good. The sashimi and sushi is fresh and all dishes come promptly. Unlike Mizuya (another similar jap restaurant on george st), the food is reasonably priced and the portions are decent. It ended up costing us 30/person and we were stuffed. However, to avoid starving in a long queue I would recommend booking in advance.
Love the novelty of ordering from a computer tap screen. Displays pictures of what the dish looks like. A bit pricey for such a small portion. Regardless, definitely look forward returning.
A fun place with some good food. Its nice not to have to constantly try and attract the attention of the wait staff. Just tap the computer and wait (usually not long) and it appears. Some of the dishes are a bit out there some work some don't. Vast menu though some dishes are on the small size for their price. As it always seems busy the front of house staff can be pushy. All in all a fun night out with a big (4 or more) crowd. Recommended.
We had the scallops, the pizza, the sushi/sashimi combo? and the kimchi rice + 2 soju drinks for about $65. It was pretty good value although I'm not sure that the soju drinks were such good value. It was all delicious and it's fun to play with the computer. I've lived in Japan and it feels quite authentic. Tha scallops are quite small but lovely.
