Great food - just that bit different from the standard Indian fare. Friendly staff and nice intimate surroundings. Prices are a little high but that reflects the quality of the ingredients. Well worth a look as a alternative to the ubiquitous Chicken tikka.
Three of us ate here on a Tuesday night. Seated promptly, a few tables were already seated. A cute brightly lit terrace house, which shares an outdoor courtyard with the other restaurants on the strip. My mother said the menu had changed from last time, she was looking forward to the Burramundi fish curry.
We ordered the redfish curry, lamb osso bucco curry and the okra tamarind curry with rice, it came with a side of pickles (mango chutney, lime pickle and chilli). The portions are quite small and for minimum $18 a dish, the value is substandard. It is yummy curry though, light and flavoursome. The rice is not priced per person, but per portion, between the three of us we ate 5 portions of rice and we think that filled us up as the curry portions were small.
The staff were friendly, though got a bit distratced towards the end of the night (but a big table of 8 came in). Gus the chef came out to talk to us which was nice. For the three curries and rice, plus a banana pudding (which was yum but not great and not as we expected) the bill was $90. A bit exorbitant given what we ate and its portion sizes (we got a small piece of meat each in each curry). Might go again with other people but only if they really wanted to try it. Value turned me off a bit but lovely food.
What a disappointment, having gone there thinking the vegie meals were good, the kitchen staff should reconsider the open kitchen, seeing the packet of frozen vegies used for our dinner, and microwaved chippatis, hmm not good. As for the dessert, the authentic goan coconut and banana pudding, seemed to resemble a sara lee carrot cake.... not going back.
Another one that is great for the veggies! This has been a favourite of mine over the last 4 years and has consistently delivered. Gus the chef is delightful, he often comes to the table to say hello, which is seldom seen in Sydney. The ambience is fine and waitstaff always pleasant and attentive.
The real deal here is the food. The Panjim Panrolls are sensational. They are a fave with both me and my meat loving husband. There are a good choice of mains and if you have room the desserts are surprisingly good. The $$$$ sign belies the value you get on most meals. I would say that this is good value for money: $15.90 for a veggies main is really quite good considering the standard.
I would DEFINITELY recommend to a friend....and in fact when I can I take them here myself.
Had dinner there on Good Friday and was expecting a quiet night and was surprised to see it buzzing. Service was warm and attentive, and the food simply amazing. Portions were great for the price. We had the Redish fillets for the starters and the Lamb shanks and Fish curry for the mains with rice and chappatis.
Unfortunately had no room for dessert but will definitely try the Banana Pudding next time.
Thoroughly enjoyed unique dishes with distinguishable flavours (something rather unusual for an indian place I reckon....). Service was very friendly and food delivered in reasonable time. Nice quiet location..tucked away behind other restaurants and the police station station in Pyrmont... but would be more cosy if they invested in better quality seats and tables rather than uncomfortable wooden outdoor furniture that's used inside and looks a bit cheap.
Overall a good eating experience that is highly recommended...portuguese thing sets the food apart from other indian restaurants. After reading the reviews below thought it deserved a better write up...so, perhaps, they're reading this page. Worth trying.
Dinner here a couple of Saturdays ago was very pleasant. At our request we were able to be seated out front with no problems on what was a fine and warm evening. The food was quite good and we certainly did not think it overpriced for the quality. We like spicy food and will be back.
I am a Goan Indian and was ecstatic to know that there was a goan restuarant in Sydney. We were warmly greeted by the staff who were courteous and friendly. The place looked pretty busy, Chef Gus was busy dishing out Goan delicacies to customers from behind the kitchen. The food was average (maybe I had high expectations from the place), almost a let down really, though it was well presented.
I ordered chappaties (a peculiar type of bread to have with the curry), to my disappointment, they were served cold. I had to chew them like gum! The food portions were attrocious and we had to order 4 main dishes between the 2 of us.
I would not recommend this place unless you want to pay through your nose for a glimpse of goan food. You would easily average 40-50$ per person and leave hungry.
