This is really a cafe but with restaurant prices. Really not good value at all. Food was ok, wine was excellent. Didn't really like being in and out of a tapas place in a bit over an hour, all the items brought to the table at once, would have been nice to enjoy a glass of wine with olives before moving on to the heartier fare. And come on guys, bottled olives in the salad?
Wow, after reading all of the positive reviews below I was so surprised about the neglect we received at this restaurant. Our experience as a table of four was comical to say the least. We had made a booking and were placed on the balcony where upon we waited for at least 20 minutes without service, acknowledgement nor menus.
The restaurant was by no capacity full and there were plenty of available tables outside. I went inside to ask for a drinks menu, the waiter looked at me with some confusion and finally handed me one menu. After 45 minutes our table was served. Our drinks order and starters were taken. No drinks appeared, after 15 minutes we go inside and ask for our drinks he says he will bring them out.
After another 10 minutes (totalling 25 minutes since we first ordered our drinks and an hour and 10 minutes after sitting down) another waiter appears at our table asking if we would like our order taken? We mentioned that we have already taken our order taken and are waiting on our drinks 'Oh I'll go get them' he says. There was some debate at the table whether we should have let him go as by now we had chosen our mains and knew the rarity of having a waiter appear at the table.
Sadly I convinced the table that we needed our drinks. I hang my head in shame. He disappears and we don't see him until dessert. Well after an hour our original waiter comes out with our drinks. In the mean time another table which sat down at the front walks out after 15 minutes of no service in the presence of dirty table. I envy them. The sad thing is that the food in itself was delicious. I have no complaints. The chorizo salad, the piri piri fish, the piri piri prawns were all fresh and tasted fantastic, the fish melted in my mouth.
The duck and fig was absolutely lovely and we ended up having two serves of the mushroom and fetta. It's just such a shame that the service was an extreme let down. The waiters weren’t rude, they were just extremely inefficient. Our dessert order got taken twice, apparently this is the way. Worth it for the food but if you want an experience where the waiters fulfil the requirements of the position then I wouldn't go here.
From the moment a friendly Julian rang to confirm my online booking for 2, I felt we were going to enjoy the Vintage Cafe. We were warmly welcomed by him when we arrived and Havi our waitress was also charming and helpful in our choice of dishes. We chose 4 tapas, patatas bravas, garlic prawns with piri piri, the meatballs in Meditarranean sauce and a chorizo pizza.
All were delicious, but the 8 plump prawns deserve special mention, they were so fresh and tasty, so tasty in fact we couldn't let the cooking juices go to waste and asked for bread to mop up the oil, and the mediterranean sauce. A bottle of the house white (which we found much better than a usual 'house white') brought the total cost to $82. We found every dish much bigger than other tapas places we had tried and thought this was very good value.
As the restaurant is in the historic Sydney Hospital, rooms are small but we liked the old hand hewn rock walls. We also marvelled at how the chefs could turn out such lovely food so efficiently from a very small kitchen. An outside verandah adds extra tables, and although it was a cool, wet night, people were happy to sit out there, rather than miss out on the chance to eat here. Our table was just inside the door, near Jose the guitarist and his very pleasant gentle music added to the casual, authentic atmosphere.
We're already planning our next visit so we can sample other tapas and the main courses which we didn't have room for on this visit.
My partner and I wanted a nice meal in the Rocks with a relaxed atmosphere and reasonable price. This delivered just that. The service was excellent, attentive but not too attentive. The food came really quickly especially for a Saturday night. We had the prawns, duck (which was lovely) meatballs, chorizo and olives with bread which were all really nice. Sangria was good. We were seated out on the balcony which seemed to be the best seating as there was a musician playing inside. Overall a most enjoyable dining experience.
Came here on the weekend with a friend. Loved it! Between the two of us we ordered the patatas bravas, flamed portuguese chorizo, Mediterranean meatballs and the vintage salad (pretty much a greek salad). My friend and I loved everything, the meatballs in particular were great, they had a lovely flavour to them, unlike most other restaurants where I've tried them. I was very impressed.
For all of that food, two glasses of sangria and two diet cokes, it came to $71. Pretty cheap I thought for a dinner in the city. The place is quite small though, so I'd recommend booking ahead. I will definitely return here.
Loved this place. Food was great, we shared a range of tapas and had some Sangria. The location is great and there was life music as well. Prices were okay, especially for the Rocks.
Lovely spot, great live background music, nice enough food. (Delicious fig and duck tapas but the tiniest, most wizened muscles I ever saw in another dish and very small portions overall, even scrimped on the bread in the cheese starter!).
Long as you don't mind the ramshackle seating arrangements (very cramped table spacing and uncomfortable chairs) you could happily stay all night philosophising over your sangria and taking in the Mediterranean-taverna ambience, very chilled and pleasant atmosphere.
The service is slow and haphazard but friendly enough. They just need more than one waitress on a Friday night I think!
The food at Vintage is more authentically Portuguese and Spanish than most such restaurants in Sydney. A range of tapas for two, with no drinks, came out under $40 total. Inside, the speakers for the live music can be a bit loud. Great location away from the busier parts of The Rocks, and reasonable service.
Some items overpriced for portion sizes. Whilst live music sounded nice, we & many other tables couldn't see it due to cafe layout. 2% "weekend" and 3% credit card surcharges leave a very bad taste.
