I went here for a friend's birthday and when I arrived I thought it was pretty cool, comfy seating, nice atmosphere. But shortly after I arrived the DJ turned up and started playing music so loud we had to lip read while plugging our ears to avoid damaging our ear drums. One of our group shouted/mimed to the DJ asking him to turn the music down a little.
He replied by shouting into her ear that he wouldn't, and that the music was quite successful, our group, which had grown to about 25 just left because we couldn't stand it any more. We noticed plenty of other people come and go pretty quickly too. Only recommended for the hearing impaired, or those who want to become so.
$14 for a small martini made with bottom-shelf gin, by a bartender that needed help with what goes into it. I went there for a drink after a movie and it was too loud because of the music, a drunk / high woman abused my mother and I and the bouncer needed to learn to smile. I would go there again for the restaurant downstairs and the Little Creatures on tap, but the Velvet room is one to avoid.
Bring back the old Bank Hotel!! This one has no atmosphere! What happened to the hotel that invited alternative clientele. This has turned into a 20-something yuppy venue that does not fit in well with the alternative atmosphere of Newtown.
This bar is exactly what Newtown ought NOT to be!! Was I in Newtown or Darling Harbour???? Chockers with half-a-brain school leaver yuppies who think they are so hip to be seen in Newtown but stare and point and snigger incessantly at any patron who looks slighty alternative.
Place is so packed, your overpriced $7.50 vodka and soda is half spilt trying to shoulder your way through the drunken crowd to your standing room only corner by the toilets. Please do yourself a favour, boycott this yuppie gentrification occuring in Newtown and head for the Townie where the drinks are cheaper, the music is better and the patrons are friendlier (and who have a brain!!!)
