I've only ever been here for lunch, and the service varies from attentive (when I'm the only customer) to woeful (when it's full). The food is nice, but pricey compared to other options further along the street. I keep going back, but not as often as I do to some of their neighbours.

The sushi and sashimi are good but not as good as other places in the area. Its good for locals looking for something nearby. In saying that, the service is always lovely.

This was a spur-of-the-moment decision for nephew's birthday. The food was fresh, delicious and generous. I was very impressed by this restaurant and will surely visit again. While every dish was tasty, the chicken teriyaki skewers, pork strips, seaweed salad and attractive sushi plate were the standout dishes. Japanese beers and saki complement the menu. One of the best meals I have had in several months.

My partner and I decided to try Ueno Aji as we love Japanese and live close by. My partner had reservations about the quality of their dishes and I regretfully defended them with optimism. I had so much hope.

It presents itself as a clean establishment, it has just opened so I hope they maintain this standard. The staff met us with a traditional greeting which always sets things off in a pleasant way.

We did not waste time in ordering, keeping it simple we went for the chefs special sushi set and a beef and mushroom dish.

For a start, the sushi and sashimi was warm. Secondly, the odour of the fish was less than inviting. Despite better judgement, I ate more than the one mouthful I should have...as did my partner as she was trying to be polite. We hate to see food go to waste so drowned the fish in lemon juice in an attempt to salvage something from the night. We tried a morsel each and moved to the beef dish.

The beef dish was a different level of ordinary. Essentially it was enoki mushrooms wrapped with thick slices of chuck steak in a bbq type sauce that gave a strange gaseous aroma. Like passing wind, I may be mistaking it for the couple next to us however, or perhaps a member of the wait staff.

The beef dish was inedible also; the fat/sinew was untrimmed and the cuts were far too thick and large to be using chopsticks. No word of a lie, I needed a well sharpened steak knife so decided to rip away at it with my hands. I had given up!

So after trying, I lost face and proposed to pick up our wine and fix the bill. My partner had stopped eating began seeing the humour in it. Very obviously warned the couple next to us against waiting for their dishes to come out which I wish had not been ignored for their sake.

If seeking a good Japanese restaurant, stick to places like Koi or Sake where food is respected and patrons are given the confidence to recommend return visits.
