Fantastic Japanese food with an authentic twist. Service was great, the recommendations were very good! The restaurant very quaint and a lot like Melbourne, places that we need more of in Sydney! Only set-back is they don't do Gyoza or Ramen.
Food was awful, the fish came out dry and the other dishes very mediocre. The portions are small so you would expect something of great taste but it wasn't. The menu selection is not your traditional japanese food but rather a fusion. In summary Unanthentic and tasteless.
My boyfriend took me here recently and we had a great night. Great funky ambience, hole in the wall kinda feel. We liked the relaxed feel it had and the food was Jap with a twist...the cherry sake was refreshing but the eggplant/parmesan dish is to die for!!! We're definitely coming back.
If you like to look at Japanese cuisine then come here and ogle. If you like to eat Japanese cuisine then stay away. You'll leave here hungry. We ordered chicken tempura, it tasted like fried chicken from your local takeaway. The prawn/fish balls with green tea salt were a rubbery gimmick. The sashimi platter is all frills with little content. The only dish worth a mention was the snapper sashimi for it's taste, not quantity.
The operative word in Uchi Lounge is Lounge. Come for a drink, not food, then again, there are much better places to drink. First and last visit.
Tad hard to find but Wow!! I ordered the lamb and it was mouth watering, beautifully sealed and sliced and an amazing flavour. We all had a great time and service was great (although I felt sorry for a couple that were told to move as they had miscounted our chairs...but apart from that they were good). And the cocktails! another wow! you have to try the green tea one.
It's the kind of restaurant that hidden at the back of the main street where you could notice it until you actually looking for it.
We ordered the set menu for 2 ($80) with:
Miso soup - not much can say as they're all the same.
Sushi (4pcs) - the sashimi are fresh, yet they put a bit too much wasabi in it.
Green Salad - Ok
Deep fried Tempura Chicken wrap in seaweed - Apart from the fact that it's not in tempura coating, this dish was quite nice, went well with the wasabi tartar sauce.
King Fish Sashimi - I like the way they marinade the fish that you can taste it without any sauce, but you can also dip it in the chilli and pesto? sauce, but I think it'd be a bit too oily.
Eggplant with miso/chess sauce - delight of the night! I'm a big fan of Jap eggplant and tried it in every Jap restaurants we went, and I've to say it'd be on my top 3 list.
Seared Tuna with wasabi mesh - I love the way they cook these raw fish. Yet they put too much wasabi in the mesh.
Overall it was a wonderful experience we had in Uchi Lounge. The only down side is that they don't have enough staff, and it took us 1 & 1/2 hr to finish our meal. Will come back again just for the eggplant!
Love it. Have now been 4 times. The food is always superb, miso eggplant is to die for. Casual and friendly service but always professional. Quiet and classy.
I was surprised. After reading the very mixed reviews, I had lowish expectations but the food was very good - innovative and generally a cut above your average Japanese restaurant. Add to that some great cocktails, a nice (and fairly priced) wine list, reasonable prices, and a relaxed ambience and it adds up to a fantastic place for a meal.
I was taken here for dinner by a friend, and having lived in Sydney my whole life was surprised it even existed. It's hidden away off Oxford Street in an old terrace house. We ordered about six dishes including entrees and mains to share.
The fish and prawn balls were a little bland but the sashimi beef was outstanding. I also enjoyed the sashimi tuna and chicken with nori. The staff were all very attentive and helpfull and we only got half way through our beers at the bar before our table was ready. I will eat here again.
We had an excellent meal there the other evening. The service was friendly and the food was great and really reasonably priced. Will definitely go again soon. Perfect for couples or with groups of friends. The green tea and cinnamon crème brulée is highly recommended!
