We came here on my sister's Korean friend's recommendation. I was so impressed that I brought some friends back the following week.

It could almost pass for a newspaper office from the outside with the big green "Ttokssam Age" sign, the corporate-looking pot plants and the automatic sliding door, but inside it is clean, modern and quite spacious.

There's an extensive menu featuring entrees, hotpots, regular mains, and of course DIY Korean barbecue. We opted for barbecue on both occasions. $25 a head gets you a selection of beef and pork cuts to barbecue yourself on the hotplate or hot coal grill: brisket, fillet, rib, and belly. Asians have a strong appreciation of the unique qualities that different cuts of meat have - particularly secondary cuts and this is part of the enjoyment. The cuts might be fattier and tougher, but they are also more flavourful and barbecuing brings this out.

Along with the meat you also get myriad side dishes of kimchi, pickles, dipping sauces and other Korean goodies. The second time there we also ordered the hotplate marinated duck and shallots. This too was superb and an even bigger hit with the group than the barbecued meats.

The floor is well staffed. Waiters are incredibly helpful and their outstanding efficiency often rivals the levels of service I see at multi-hatted restaurants. They don't speak a lot of English but if they see you struggling with your meat or being a bit forgetful they will smile and gently intervene, turning your meat and cutting it up for you. You feel looked after, and nothing seems too much trouble.

I cannot recommend the Ttokssam Age enough. To those who are not very familiar with Korean food, I assure you the food is mostly very accessible (just pick things you recognise and you'll be right). In fact, I plan to organise a work dinner here in the coming weeks.

Very good flavourful food. We enjoyed the meal very much, and will return.
Beware those $8 drinks that might look like an alco-pop in the picture on the menu, are actually bottles of sake and they're fantastic!
