I went here for dinner recently with my husband. The menu looked quite appealing but the food itself was tasteless. We had a very small piece of garlic and herb bread for entrée and I hoped that the mains may improve. I had the lamb shanks and my husband had spaghetti bolognese. He thought his meal was okay. Mine, well, let’s just say I wondered whether the chef knew about the importance of flavour.
The lamb was bland and the serving of cooked veggies I received were small and basically raw and crunchy. I would have loved a hint of rosemary or some kind of flavour with the lamb. The best thing was the service. Very friendly (almost too friendly) and attentive.
I went with a friend on a Monday for lunch. It is in a pleasant location and the outdoor area looks nice. I ordered the Pork Belly which was on the specials menu, however, everything on the specials menu sounded delicious. It was a lovely flavour, served with potatoes; my only complaint would be the inclusion of one other vegetable. My friend ordered a pasta which she loved. The waiter was friendly and attentive, so was the manager/owner.
If you have been here before and were disappointed try this place again, a new chef is in the kitchen and for the first time ever in this restaurant, they have actually got someone who knows what they are doing! His food is fresh, tasty and interesting, you will really be pleased. Good on you Trojan's for hiring him!!!!
Went for a "quick lunch", which turned into a long wait for two bowls of soup (40minutes). Coffee here is weak and if such a wait is to be endured, then a strong hit of caffeine might have helped.
I really felt sorry for the girls that have to serve this pathetic excuse for food. I visited Trojans with my family last Sunday for an afternoon lunch. We couldn't order half the things on the menu because they were 'out' and then when we did order it was very disappointing.
Husband and I had the meze for two which was basically a selection of tinned foods and cold pre-packaged foods. I couldn't believe that I was being charged $30 for it too! They forgot my 3yr old's Plain toast and the only saving grace was that the other two kids enjoyed their bacon and eggs but thats not exactly special food.
Most of all I saw no Greek or Italian fusion of food, maybe tinned and frozen fusion instead? Save your money and stock up at your local deli!
For our first visit we also took an interstate visitor to Trojan's for breakfast, and were warmly welcomed at the door by the new owner (who also checked on us and gave us his card). The food was delicious, although the portions were a little on the small side and this affected the value for money. The environment was excellent & the staff very attentive.
The food here is uninspiring and tasteless. Tastless veggies, flavourless mash, average meat, whatever you are looking for from a meal there are lots better options available.
Went here on Friday, 2 May 2008 with friends for dinner. Service was excellent - waiters are attentive but distant as it should be. Garlic Bread at $5 a hit for a measly piece of Turkish bread saturated with cheap margarine (not butter or oil) and garlic - is not only overpriced but tasteless.
The Moussaka was the worst I have ever eaten. The eggplant that was used to make this dish - was not fit to be used in the first place but nonetheless they made the dish with it - they weren’t eating it!. The lamb shanks that my friends ordered were apparently “nice”. Would they have them again” “nope!”. Why? “just wouldn't no taste really” they said. We are at a Greek Restaurant - if you can't get the Moussaka (which is really an Arab dish not a Greek dish) right then any other dish is not going to be any good either.
Would I go again - never. Would I recommend it to someone - no. Move on down or up Darling Street guys, there are restaurants that cook good food and use good food products.
We used to love Trojans. The food was always ok as long as you did not expect too much. Great for breakfast on a Sunday but I would not go there for dinner or a "proper meal" if you like anything other than cafe fare.
The staff is great and would do small touches that reflect Balmain community values. A bowl of water for your dog or tiny teddy biscuits for your kids. It is the food that lets it down. Twice enticed by the great front of house service, I ordered main meals there and twice they were awful.
The last time they served us lattes with sour milk. Such a shame! With the competition Trojans has to pick up their once "successful game".
My partner and I just recently moved to Balmain and well .. we have found our second home. Make sure you sit outside, glass of pinot grigio in hand and try the rissotto -s / pastas they are just a fusion which equates to perfection!
Well done to the waiters who are just so attentive and considerate at all times.
If you're nice enough, the port sometimes flows too ..
