The food here wasn't great but it wasn't terrible either. The prices are a bit steep though. The steaks are tiny and they charge $28!!! The actual pub itself and the outdoor area is very nice. We had a few kids (all under 1 year) in our party and the Toxteth had no problems accommodating them (even well into the night!!!). A good place to go if you have kids.
I used to really like this place several years ago, but I think the bistro has changed hands a number of times and the food is not what is used to be. I like the outdoor area, but the food is mediocre and overpriced.
I have been going to the Toxteth on and off for about 6 years and its now sunk to an all time low. Service is pathetic. Asking for a drink from one of the bar girls was like pulling teeth. I used to spend between $500 to $800 a week there on meals and drinks. Not any more, that guaranteed income is now gone. There are plenty of pubs that appreciate your money and to be quite frank why should I pay $7.50 for a spirit and then be given service you would expect from an angry cow.
OK so this isn't gourmet cooking, and it doesn't pretend to be. But with nothing on the menu over $20 and specials every night, I can't think why is doesn't represent good value. If you just want something to eat, fast and a decent size portion, you could do a lot worse.
I just can't get into the tocky, even though it is the closest pub to me. It is a totally weird set up. The main bar faces a wall, and the main sitting/ drinking area is through a door way. They need to knock the wall down, and open the place up. The TAB is the most visible part of the pub, although the pokies are thankfully out of sight. The refurbishment is all very confused. They need to knock the whole building down and start from the beginning again. In short, I'd stop at the AB if I were you. The tocky just aint worth the walk.
I've lived in Glebe for many years now and, in the old days, the Toccy was a quietly subversive little pub with a strong pull for dodgy regulars and knocking out the odd bit of hooky goods. In short the old place had personality. Many is the night we sat there and got quietly blasted out the back - way before the beer garden or bistro or lounge etc - when there was still a drive through bottle shop (remember that anyone?)
The Pub changed with the years, as is normal for any entertainment establishment - clientele change, the suburb changes etc so the pub has to cater to these factors. And, until quite recently, last year for example, the Toccy was still my first choice for a drink when I walked up Glebe Point Road with a skip to my step and powerful thirst!
Then.....things started to change at a rapid pace, bewildering is the best way to describe the progress:
The bistro went through a string of contract operators - mostly awful but whenever the Pub itself took over things improved incredibly quickly. The outcome was that one was lulled into a sense of false security regarding the food and would invariably be used to a reliable selection when the damn contractors would get their hands on the bistro again and the place would go down!
But I didn't mind too much as I now refuse to eat in pubs when they charge a lot more than very decent restaurants and often can't even field one qualified chef! You should ask at the next bistro you eat at, especially for a $25 steak, whether your food is being prepared by a bona fide chef or a pimply fool in an apron? you may be surprised and in need of a stiff drink......
So I visited the Toccy last week after awaiting the new alterations and renos to take effect. The TAB is in a quiet though Sunny corner (i'd stick those pack of losers in the basement if I could) but at least out of the way of respectable drinkers. The front 'Lounge' is utterly terrible - with the walk through to the gaming area (shudder). I am yet to understand the thinking behind this new thinking; I have to admit, I was under the belief that the front room would lose the pool tables (fair enough - they attracted a lot of scummy locals and dodgy backpackers - I saw plenty of fights over the games....no loss at all) but then would become a Live Entertainment area - with the possibility of Bands etc in the future. i see no indicatino of that and the Licensee didn't seem to know a lot when I asked her.
The Beer garden is still great - pity they donb't do a lot of sport and films out there anymore - it is set up with surround sound after all - and the cook your own station is always out of commission. the tables urgently need replacement too - check them out; shocking!
So the rest of the pub is now thoroughly Homogenised (look it up, very applicable) as are so many of the previously great hotels in Sydney. This needs to come to a rest - enough is enough. Thank God for the following great Glebe Pubs that I now walk a little further to frequent but find it very worthwhile:
The Nags Head - Cracking pub, great food (with a chef), friendly staff and good beer. You must try it if you haven't been
The Excelsior - Live music, great prices and cheap meals. Good pool tables and chill out area upstairs. Hidden gaming area (Thank God). This is a good pub
The Different Drummer - Best Bar in Sydney. If you want a smart drink or a cocktail you can't go past this. It's a cool place, the staff remember your name and your drink; you must try the tapas. Open til late (which is a rarity)
What a shocking experience, the food at the Toxteth is awful now, the staff are rude in the bistro. The manager there was rude then proceeded to rush our food, came out before my friend came back with 3 drinks, the brushetta could have been used as a doorstopper, the steak sandwich on tip top bread with cheap steak - dreadful and even the steamed veg were oily, overpriced and ghastly. The brushetta bread was tooth breaking. The food is terrible and overpriced for what it is. We will never go back again.
The hotel have taken the kitchen back over the meals are getting back to the good old pub food at a great price. Hotel going under renovations and will be interesting what they will come up with.
I live around the corner and went there for a quick meal. The price of a steak meal with chips (not fries) and vegies was $8 on a Monday night. Staff at the bar and the bistro were not very friendly and the steak was on the very stringy side. Probably will never go back there for a meal. There are plenty of other places with better food in the area.
