I also have been coming to the Townie for years and love it, never had a problem with the bouncers, bar guys always good, food great and good value, and the ambience upstairs is what makes this your quintessential Newtown pub. If you want some sparkling McPub full of pretentious people and footballers then hit elsewhere but if you're after an interesting night with interesting people, the Townie is always a great place for a drink!!
Man, the Townie rocks, I've been coming here for years and yes some of the 'staff' are pretentious but all in all the pub has always done and will probably always rock, the Townie is the only place to go in Newtown if you're a local. The food is better than its ever been and the bistro staff are nicest they have ever had, go Townie woohoo. Can't wait for the live music.
Ok I would give this place a higher grade for food and drinks if the beer actually tasted like beer. The beer on tap tastes like the pipes have never been cleaned and has been very off on more than one occasion. There's nothing worse than a bad beer being served to you by somebody who thinks smiling is just something your nun does. Although, not all the staff are like this. I find the staff upstairs to be much friendlier.
I find the food to be great here if you fancy a good, hearty lunch and don't want to pay much. The food staff are a lot nicer than the bar staff and will look after you. It can be quite quiet or very busy so if you want a private gossip with your pals over dinner, get there early!
I have a love hate relationship with the Townie. I have been coming here for years and over the years I would say I've had varied experiences with it. A lot of the bar staff can be really nice and friendly at times and at other times they can ignore you and scowl at you when you finally get noticed. I don't think the bouncers are too bad, although at times they can be rude. The food is usually good and the drinks are priced normally. It can get very crowded here on the weekends and even sometimes on weeknights. So if you come in after 10pm, don't expect to find somewhere to sit. It can even be hard to find somewhere to stand at times.
All in all, I would say only come to the Townie if you're expecting a big night out with loads of friends. If you're looking for a quiet local pub, go somewhere else. I do love the Townie for its familiarities however, and it's the kind of place that locals can go and pretty much always see someone you know.
I have never had any problems with the bouncers, and I have shown up at the Townie in all sorts of getup. It is not a yuppie bar, so do not expect it to be swish and slick. Its a nice comfy pub with a great atmosphere. We started going here when The Bank closed, and after venturing back to the Bank, we headed for the Townie about 2 seconds later.
Just came in tonight. The menu has been changed to a spring season. The menu is not yupiee yet it is tasty. Recommended Salt and Pepper Squid, it is to die for. Good selection of beer and booze. Staff are very friendly. Highly recommended Pub.
YAY!! for some exceptional pub food in Newtown. The menu is first class and extensive, yet reasonably priced. The goats cheese souffle is to die for! The atmosphere isn't fabulous but more than worth the visit for the quality and price of the food. Being an Eastern Suburbs girl, I never make the trek but have returned time and time again!
Heard new bistro operators and great new chef have taken over upstairs @ platform 8 at the Town Hall Hotel. Went in to try it out a few weeks ago and have been going back a couple of times of week. Wow! what a change to see great quality and priced food in a pub bistro. Meet Michael, the new chef, he tells me he used to be a chef in Double Bay. Too bad for Double Bay great for Newtownites. I suggest you try it for yourselves. I guarantee you won't be disappointed and you will return as frequent as I do. Cheers!
Must agree that the bouncers are dick heads but the first rule of pub life is "never argue with a bouncer". I was recently denied access for no particular reason. That's cool, I am happy to take my hard earned dollars elsewhere.
