A place that I visit often. Nice food, especially the sashimi, very fresh and tasty. I like their use of fresh sashimi not only for sushi and sashimi boat, but also in the Ikura don (rice with sashimi).
I've been regularly going to Toraya. Really nice food in general. Especially love their tempura ice cream! Would also recommend their calamari and wagyu beef. They also have various salads in generous servings. The grilled eggplant is tasty but way too oily. Service could be very slow when busy, and they usually are busy.
Our normal Yum-Cha restaurant was a little busy, so we decided to give this Japanese restaurant a try. Very glad we did, and we'll definitely be coming back.
Sashimi was excellent quality and the main courses were great too. Service was excellent despite the fact that they were busy. Highly recommended.
Nice Japanese food and prices are very reasonable. We have returned many times and still not able to try everything on the menu. BYO wine is nice and free parking with shop stamp is very convenient in the Mandarin Centre car park. Highly recommend this Japanese restaurant in Chatswood.
Update May 2008: Continuous to be one of our favourite Japanese restaurants. Food is constantly good and sashimi and sushi are very fresh. We are still quite amazed with the menu offering such large selections. Only one bit is they serve the food dishes very quick bang on the table we usually could not eat that fast to keep up. All in all, very nice place.
Huge variety of good Japanses food (note there are 2 menus - lunch sets and a la carte). It is a restaurant and not an extension of the food court so don't expect food court prices. Service is good but dishes tend to come all at once so ask for them to come slowly.
Food is fresh with some unusual items on the menu. Will be back again and again.
Tried sashimi on rice, and grilled mackeral. Fresh fish, tasty sauce, a bit overpriced for the food-court style fitting restaurant. Generally good food.
will go again!
Disappointingly inconsistent. The booths are lovely and intimate, if the downlighting a little too bright, what is this, Guantanamo interrogation centre? There is potential for flavours that don't quite penetrate. Looks great, though.
I have eaten here a few times and in general I have found the sushi and sashimi to be of a poor quality. It doesn't have the fresh indulgent flavours, colour and texture of other places that seem to be more fresh. The Beef Tataki was a joke.
But the cooked main meals are very nice and very well priced. So if you are not a sushi or sashimi fan this is the restaurant for you!
The Chef and Restauranteur partnership have struck 3rd time lucky, with previous restaurants in Artarmon and Eastwood offering mediocre Japanese fare. Toraya has not disappointed. The sashimi is always the freshest and served as generous thick slices. The huge variety on the menu is a plus. The decor disappoints, but is made up for in the excellent quality and taste in food.
I have been to this restaurant a few times now and haven't been disappointed with the food or service. The place is bright and decently decorated. The staff are attentive and polite. Have tried the sashimi platter and the fish was fresh. Tried an eel-rice dish once that had onions and egg on top and it was fantastic. The bento boxes are decent too. The place is good value for money. Definitely recommended.
