SMH Good Food Guide 2012 - One Chef's Hat

Overview of Tomislav

Informal dining experience with a view。 Tomislav is “mod-oz” cuisine with a view. On the cusp of both King’s Cross and Darlinghurst, it emanates cool ambiance, with a spectacular view of Sydney Harbor Bridge. Open from 6pm until late, it’s a great spot for an informal drink and entrees, or to come for a special occasion. It also boasts a small, well rounded wine menu and upscale drinks list.

My wife took me there for my birthday. The food was perfect and the service was great. It is pricey, but you get what you pay for.

6 of us took the 8 course degustation Saturday May 4th. In short, this was a spectacular meal. Staff couldn't have been more attentive and friendly. I'm pretty happy at a degustation if a couple of the dishes amaze me, but I've got to say that last night every one astounded and rendered us speechless with gustatory pleasure. Has rocketed to the top of my favourite Sydney restaurants.

I don't know if it's luck of the draw that other folks have had poor experiences at Tomislav, but since we had a lucky draw, I'm going to be absolutely honest: this was one of the best restaurant experiences I've had lately. The service was great. The food was amazing. And the ambience was lovely. I also thought the wine list was great. I'd recommend it whole-heartedly, will be back, and want more of that hen's yolk and foie gras concoction!

Had one of our worst restaurant experiences in Sydney ever at Tomislav, such an overrated place! Atmosphere really sterile but at the same noisy, staff incompetent and unfriendly and then worst of all, the food not even up to scratch.

The wine list contains either real cheap and nasty stuff or totally over the top priced wines that you can get for a third at your local dan Murphy's and the food is totally overpriced as well for the poor quality. We already had a disappointing night but the bill made us even more disappointed and with those prices, they don't even accept American Express or Diners! Ridiculous, never again!

Absolutely awesome, no wonder why this place received a chefs hat this year.
Food was amazing and the service was like I was eating at my family home.
    Keep it up Tomislav

Worst experience ever. I made a booking for 7 people at 9pm for Sugar Hit (9pm is when Sugar Hit starts) and we arrived at 9pm sharp - only to be told that my name's not in their book. The waiter simply told us to leave after a glance at his book! It came as a total shock as I had called to book more than a week in advance. Even so, we stood and waited there patiently as the waiter flicked through his book again.

After 30 seconds of flicking back and forth of his book, the waiter simply told us to leave again without trying to do something about it and, during the 30 seconds:

    1. he frowned and questioned if we called the correct number;
    2. when I pointed to a booking under the same name as mine, thinking "phew", he rudely said "No that is not your booking. There are more than one xxx in town you know.", and I could tell he was not joking.
    3. he even yelled over our shoulders to the people behind us saying something to the effect: "OK, so anyone there that actually has a booking?" And proceeded to seat those people without excusing himself.

So we were left standing there. When he came back, he seemed annoyed and he had a why-are-you-still-here-I-told-you-to-leave look. He again asked us to leave, but I insisted nicely that I had in fact made a booking, there must be something he can do. He reluctantly went to speak to the chef. When he came back, he told us the chef could do it and they could seat us at bar on the balcony (His tone made us feel like he's doing us a huge favour).

At this point of course I wasn't very happy about the situation because during the whole ordeal it seemed like he think we're a bunch of liars trying to get a table without booking. So while he went setting up our table, I took out my iphone and found the call history.

I showed the waiter and asked him if it's their number. That's when he said "Oh. It is our number. That's strange, because I never make mistakes." (Who in a service industry would say that?). Before I said anything, he went on "Well, now you're getting your table, there's no point saying this now. We're doing the best we can okay." His eyes didn't meet mine when he said all these and he certainly did not apologise.

At this point, I didn't feel like eating anymore. But since 2 friends came out that night just for the Sugar Hit, I didn't want to make them come for nothing - bad move.

After some 10 minutes after we were given the menu, the waiter decided to come and tell us that instead of getting 4 choices as shown on the Crave Sydney official page, we could only choose from 2. Great, you couldn't have told us earlier? The dessert that most of us wanted to try (and had decided to order) was out - by which time it was too late to leave after all the hassle.

What a joke. First, it shouldn't have let this happen because Sugar Hit starts at 9pm and we got there at 9pm. Despite the booking mix up, only one group (of 2 or 3) came after us. Second, even if the limitation on choice was due to their booking error, fine. But we should've been made aware of it before we were seated as we told them up front we're there for Sugar Hit! Again, the waiter did not apologise for it.

The dessert took forever to come, which is understandable because their kitchen is quite small. When it finally came, I have to say, it's beautifully plated and it certainly had a unique taste. But to me it lacks the wow factor and it's not something that will leave you wanting for more (I am a big fan of desserts, it was not a huge dish but I couldn't finish my vanilla cheesecake). In fact, I don't even remember what it tastes like now and it's only the second day after we went there.

But what's worst? The restaurant was not full at all. I didn't see anyone (except for that one group) else came in after us - even if there were, the restaurant was certainly not full. In fact it was quite empty. The big table in the middle of the restaurant was empty the whole time. So why did they seat us in the cold at the bar table? I guess we'll never know because we're not going back.

We're local and we eat out a lot. We went to this restaurant on a friend's recommendations but wouldn't go back. The food was fine, not great, but significantly over-priced ($200 for two, and we shared entree and desert). Service was awkward and not up to the standard we'd expect from a one hat restaurant.

What a great little restaurant. The menu is different and not what you might expect but it over deliver. It is a bit of a strange location with the view of the coke sign of kings cross. Give it a go, undoubtedly this restaurant will end up in a better location and be one of sydney's best!

Came here for the boy's birthday and we both had a fantastic time. We had an inside window seat so had a nice view of the the Cross and the chefs at work in the tiny open kitchen.

The food was absolutely fantastic, the perfect combination of fun and delicious. We had the rice crackers and kangaroo tartare to start. The boy is not a fan of raw meat, but he inhaled the tartare because it was that good. We had the quail and oysters for our entrees. The oysters were fantastic, sweet and plump and paired with a lemon ice which was pure genius.

For our mains, we had the scotch fillet and lamb rump and they were both delicious with fun elements. For dessert, I had organised for their milk chocolate cream cake to be made into a birthday cake as a surprise for the boy. Unwittingly, he also wanted to order the cheesecake, which was a delicious surprise in itself. When the cake finally came out, it was amazing. And delicious! The boy couldn't wipe the smile off his face.

I cannot fault the service. The moment we walked in we were greeted with a warm welcome and the friendly service carried through to the entire evening. Thank you so much to Ann Marie for making the night possible and Tomislav for the beautiful cake. We will be back soon to try the other items on the menu and we will be recommending Tomislav to all our friends.
