The food is affordable but not especially nice. The real sticking point however, was the service. There were three tables during lunch hour, proving three tables too many for the staff. Although we ordered first, some of the ppl at the other tables (not all of them though) were served before some of us, meaning that we didn't get to share the meal together.
On top of that, some (but again not all) of our orders were misplaced meaning that we had the privilege of waiting 45 mins for a quick pub meal while other ppl eating with us only had to wait 10 mins. With a bit of organisation, it might be ok, but certainly not worth raving about.
The Quarryman's Hotel is on the corner of Harris Street and Pyrmont Bridge Road in Pyrmont. We were driving by and noticed an amazing special - a seafood platter for two for $50 and it was a platter including lobster, and sourced fresh daily from the neighbouring Sydney Fish Market (which is within walking distance). The only catch - you have to ring and order your platter by 10am on the day you want it. Being easily excited by such things, we rang and ordered one for the very next day, Sunday. They hadn't had any requests for platters on a Sunday before but they said it would be fine and to come in.
When we did, apparently there was a problem and the platter hadn't happened. Instantly we were offered a complimentary meal as they accepted ownership of the mistake in telling us on the phone that it would be possible. We selected mains from their menu which ranged from $10-$20. A complimentary garlic bread arrived at the table. It was a nice roll but it needed the garlic butter to be spread more evenly over the whole pieces and the garlic itself was quite bitter. Our complimentary mains were huge. I selected BBQ Pork Back Ribs ($16.50) which were served with a fresh salad of leaves, Spanish onion, parmesan and tasty tomatoes, and a mustard based potato salad (a little too strongly mustard for my personal taste). My dining companion had the Surf and Turf ($17) which was a huge piece of prime rib, topped with four deliciously fresh grilled king prawns (you really can taste the daily seafood collection difference). The bernaise sauce it came with (unfortunately non house-made) was great, and it also was accompanied by chunky cut fries and salad.
Both plates were heaving with food, and the quality all over was great for pub food, and great in terms of value. There were also some specials, priced at the $10 mark on a board displayed near the bar. These including things like Tempura Battered Fish Fillets with salad and chips, and a steak with the same fixings.
Just when we thought it was over, we were given complimentary desserts too! (Making it $48 value in food all up received for them forgetting to arrange our $50 seafood platter). We enjoyed the sticky date puddings (stuffed with large dates), served with caramel sauce, lovely fresh strawberries and ice-cream. We left feeling like we were treated very well, despite not getting the platter we came for. As a result, I think we will be back! In terms of ambience, the upstairs is a pleasant place to while away the afternoon - it has booth seating, table seating, a bar, a few pool tables and a smoking balcony only steps from your table. The staff are pleasant and eager to please. Mistakes are graciously and thoroughly atoned for.
