I've visited the Possum quite a few times during the last couple of decades! Not a place I would frequent if I was sober otherwise I'd never buy a drink. Who in their sober mind would pay $9 for a rum and coke? And this for a rum and coke that tastes of, well just coke. I'm sure the rum is diluted. Then there's the delivery method, served by a couple of seniors, one of them with surgical rubber gloves (what goes on back there?) and the ice is served from a very unflattering Esky!
The senior staffs certainly don't go out of their way to make you feel anything but uneasy. But like I said, I would not go there sober so none of these shortcomings ever get noticed.
The best thing about the Possum is the atmosphere on Friday and Saturday nights. Karaoke is ok, but you can hardly hear the singer above the rest of the rabble!
The drinks are way too expensive, and the service is dreadful, but it's always packed and the atmosphere's great. The absolute insult though, is when you are handed your drink by someone wearing a surgical rubber glove. Like, they're telling you you're a piece of dirt but they'll still take your money off you!
A good place to go when you're up for something livelier than the Oaks but feel too old for minskies. But be warned as it's full of the following, people who look old enough to know better, piss pots, desperadoes, Karaoke and ice out of an esky. It is what it is!
The Possum and I were acquainted in 2003/4. What a great place . John was always a helpful barman. I loved singing at that place. The security was just anyone ..lol it does look closed from the outside.
Once I was going to the bathroom and stopped to answer my phone. At that stage the place was getting busy....I returned after the call, and found it to be standing room only..wow what a place!! I had to go back to West oz in 2005, but man do I miss the Possum, I so enjoyed my time in Sydney for those 3 yrs, and the Possum and all who attended the place. I thank you ....I hope John isn't smoking still.
We went to Pickled Possum after dinner last saturday night and its the most fun we have had in a long time, I can't believe I never heard about it before, now great night thanks guys, just lower your drink prices a little.
Either you love it or you hate it, or both. Went on a cold Saturday night, place was packed of a mixture of young and old going for gold on the mic, karaoke that is. For a place that has the stage held up by milk crates, they sure pull a crowd. Security, which consisted of the bar man and a few locals saved me and a mate from a drunked yob looking for a knuckle. Good night out!!!
A place where you have to knock to get in! (go figure) A place where they bring in ice in eskys (what the?) A place where Karaoke is performed wherever the heck you are standing. A place where old is solid gold!
Truly the most bizzare Karaoke bar I have ever been to. It looks shut before 1030pm (and probably is?) but once the old groovers emerge from their embalmed state's, the place fills quicker than an esky full of ice.
Unfortunately, I earnt a reputation there. I sang okay - and if you're an ok singer - they remember you at the Poss! After one performance, a man shook my hand and a lady told me I should be on Australian Idol.
Have been going to this bar for a number of years and have seen a lot of changes. For music wise and fun loving crowds, it is always a good night out. Owners are nice people. Can recommend it.
Having been a regular for almost 14 years. Lots of fun and memories at the Possum. All ages, all walks of life have been here. We always return for a good fun night. Great bar.
