Downstairs and upstairs are totally different experiences, but both do what they do very well. My experiences upstairs have invariably been great, with sincere and friendly staff, professional security, great music, and the plethora of drop-dead gorgeous, shirtless men will set the heart racing.
A truly professional and slick club experience which leaves the competition in its dust. Also seems to have less messed-up people in the early hours than elsewhere. The only downside is the awkwardly long and narrow dancefloor, but the shows are still of a high standard. When I want a big night out, I won't go anywhere else.
Used to be fantastic in the 70s and 80s. Now hideous and tacky. Downstairs is chinatown central and awful commercial top 40 crappy music. Upstairs as usual for gay clubs in sydney has become a crystal meth den for insecure bitchy queens with cookie cutter bodies. The music is generally at least 140-150bpms as meth users need fast monotonous boring beats to do their dinosaur dance to. Shame really, used to be such a great club.
This place is just plain awful. I have lived in Sydney as a gay man for over two decades and I can never understand why this club even exists. It is over priced, the staff rude and shows pathetic and amateur. The music and sound are Ok and the lighting overdone but really poor in the control.
If you like your men both beautiful and butch, then this is thie place for you. The place is packed every weekend with mostly (shirtless) guys, pumping with the best dancefloor-filling tracks, and the staff (including the bouncers) have the best attitude I've come across in Sydney. My friends and I have never had anythging but an absolutely fantastic time upstairs at the Shift, and wouldn't consider going anywhere else. An outstanding industry leader.
Went here for the first time on Saturday night (22/10) and loved it. Being from Melbourne it was nice to be somewhere different. The guys were really friendly and the music was cool. Wasn't worth $20 entry fee though, and the show was ok. Nothing special.
But overall a great venue. Will be back next time for sure.
Great place. I am there every Friday and Saturday. Drinks are well prices, service is good. I am the Asian guy who dances on the stage most times hehe!
Actually it was one of the coolest club in Sydney if you consider the ambience. I had so much fun over there during my staying in Sydney. The music was funky and I met a lot of friendly people over there.
I LURVE the Shift! Whether it's downstairs for a friendly game of pool and dancing to the FABULOUS 70's disco diva music played by the DJ's, or upstairs having a crazy time under the laser lights -- it's always wonderful. And I'm a girl! ha ha I have never had a problem getting in or having a good time. My straight gay boy friends also love it. The crowd is gorgeous, the bartenders friendly and talented and the DJ's usually very good. We rarely go anywhere else!
