For a restaurant that is attached to a cinema I was pleasantly surprised with Martini Bar. The menu is quite extensive and the gnocchi I ordered was delicious. The drinks menu is also great with a good selection of cocktails. Would definitely recommend to friends and couples, particularly if they are heading to a movie afterwards.
The Palace Cinema on Norton Street Leichhardt has great movies and great facilities i.e. it’s stylishly modern, has comfy chairs and big screens. It also has a car park directly below and Martini’s Bar + Restaurant attached to the cinema. I think there’s also a live music venue there too but can’t confirm this. I craved convenience this night so the idea of everything in one spot (i.e. parking, movie & dinner) appealed, so whether Martini’s was great or not wasn’t that critical. After a tipple at Martini’s bar we saw the French WWII movie ‘Female Agents’ and went straight from the movie to our waiting reserved table by the front window overlooking the wildlife on Norton Street.
The décor, furnishings and settings are classy (i.e. thick linen tablecloths and napkins, expensive looking cutlery and crockery, nice seats etc) and the wait staff pleasant, attentive and professional. I was impressed with the range of wines on offer, especially the fact all were offered by glass as well as bottle. The rest i.e. cocktails, beers etc was comprehensive. We ordered an Italian Messina beer and glass of Riesling. The mixed bruschetta at $7 was 3 slices of crusty toasted Italian bread with different toppings, the traditional tomato, a puree of some sort, maybe mushrooms with parmesan, and aioli with something that looked like green weeds on top. All were ok but the tomato tasted simply of chopped tomato which was a bit bland and not what you expect.
My wife had the $26 sirloin main with green peppercorn sauce and while it was nice she was somewhat disappointed with the small size of the steak and the rather mean serving of steamed cauliflower, carrots and broccoli. For this price she felt they could have made the dish a bit more generous and included some potatoes, especially since appetites tend to be heartier in this cold weather. I had the $19 Salsiccia sausage pizza which with spinach , tomato base and a bland curdled milk style cheese topping was different to what I’m used to and not bad either. A bit more taste would have been nice but maybe this is the style of this pizza. Don’t look for ham and pineapple or supreme here, it looks like they stick to traditional Italian toppings and combinations, most of which I was unfamiliar with. We finished with a $3 latte (ok), pleasant $7 serve of 3 or 4 small balls of sorbet and gelato and a rather tasteless $12 stewed apple on soft wafer pastry thing called a tartatin.
All said this place is an OK all round experience if a little pricey for what you get yet I’ll be back to try other pizza's and pastas at least as they looked enticing. If convenient and stylish dinner with a movie at Leichhardt with easy parking is your aim, as was mine, then this is your package. One suggestion I'd make is to change the name of this place on the Eatability website to include the word 'restaurant' as you'd be forgive for thinking 'The Martini Bar' was just that when it certainly isn't.
I can't tell you how shocked I was at how disgusting the food was, especially considering I was in Norton Street. I ordered a pasta dish with Balmain Bug, sun-dried tomato and lobster bisque - there was no sun-dried tomato, the bug was almost non-existent and the bisque was awful and it cost me $25. Never again, I can cook better myself.
Had an enjoyable time with great service and a well maintain staff, the bar staff were exceptional keeping my drink topped up at all times and the service was second to none, great work, Keep up the good work Josie and Ross.
I took my boyfriend here for dinner last night. The location is great, the decor is new and stylish. The service was great, the food melted in your mouth and very fresh (I had Beef Papperdelle, my boyfriend had a pizza and we shared some flat bread and dips and raspberry pannacotta).
There was a live jazz band playing. The wine recommendations were spot on and the cocktails were great. I have high standards and this exceeded all my expectations! Highly recommended. Try Sunday night with free salsa lessons! This is a stress free comfortable, relaxing restaurant.
The restaurant was very modern, service was great, food was delicious and very plentiful, and extremely well priced. There were four adults and we had two pizzas, two salads, and garlic bread to share, beer and cokes to drink and we left there with a bill of $69. Where do you go these days and have a great meal and atmosphere for less than $20 a head! The menu wasn't extensive, however, that does make you believe that what they have to order is very fresh, and all of our meals were indeed very fresh and made to order! I would definitely dine here again and highly recommend.
I venture to the Martini Bar most Sunday nights not only for the great food and service, but a free salsa night starting at 7 pm to late. The food is fantastic!!
The chicken Caesar salad with avocado is a good choice as a starter or main depending on how hungry you are. The bruchetta with mushrooms and fetta cheese is a must try and seems to be a favourite with customers. The gnocchi with crab meat in pink sauce is the best around.
The service is excellent, the waitresses always cheerful & smiling and always ready to help. Josie the co-owner with her husband/chef make you feel at home. It's such a joy to come here. This place has a cosmopolitan atmosphere with upstairs veranda and views over Norton Street. This is my favourite restaurant in the Sydney metro area.
Went relatively early on a Friday night and found the restaurant to be almost empty, bar one rather large family gathering. Me and my friend were seated away from the group, allowing us to talk and eat in peace. We were served promptly and the bruschetta we ordered was the perfect starter, with just the right amount of flavour.
For my main I ordered the steak in red wine sauce which came promptly and cooked as specified, to a perfect medium-rare. The meat melted in the mouth and the vegetables were delicious, although the spinach was a little over-done. My friend ordered the stuffed chicken and said it was amazing and I must say it looked (and smelt) as good as she said it tasted!
The drinks were also a highlight with an extensive cocktail menu. They definitely live up to their name with a large range of variously flavoured martinis, however I decided to go with the oddly names jejuis which was not a disappointment. The drinks went down extremely well, were served quickly and presented beautifully - my friends Playboy cocktail was garnished with various fruits and looked amazing. The cosmopolitans were also pleasing, not too strong and made with quality cranberry - sometimes a difficult thing to find nowadays!
All in all an extremely pleasing experience, and although the atmosphere was a little quiet the food was great and the service efficient, yet not overbearing. Definitely recommended for a stylish start to a long night!
