This review is quite delayed. I attended my girlfriend's birthday high tea at the loft in May. The venue was specifically selected for the advertised cocktails in teapots.
Don't waste your money. The teapots are full of ice with barely any booze. The actual food served for the high tea was fantastic.
In contrast, the ditsy waitstaff were hopeless and couldn't have timed an egg, they just had no idea of how to take command and make your experience worthwhile, or what needed to be served in what order or at what time.
But the teapot cocktails, while entincing flavour combinations showed on the menu, were watery hopeless wastes of cash which is a huge disappointment given a) our excitement and b) what a fanTASTIC idea it was.
I won't recommend this high tea experience to anyone. Ever. Go to the Loft for a sunset glass of champagne. Its a lovely venue with spectacular views and there's little chance they can ruin champagne in a glass, though you'll get severely overcharged for it.
Let me explain my scores. Drinks-5. Why? Because I didn't stay long enough to have one. So, I'll be fair and go half way. Ambience-1. Why? Because once we got in, it was impossible to hear what each of us were saying. I sent out a group to text to say lets get out of here, and thank godness for the vibrate function on mobiles.
Also I couldn't tell what the decor was like because there must have been a black out. Or the place is full of really ugly people who need to stay in the shadows!
Service-5. Well half way again, because we aborted our mission. And finally value- well half way between awful and mediocre is probably fair. Boring boring boring!
Went there today for drinks and a spot of lunch. The place was empty so the drink service was quite quick.
However when is came to order food, we were told that we could not be served anything but the high tea, and I really did want to eat sandwiches. When asked if there was an alternative, we were told that we could wait for 3 hours till their normal food service resumed or we could go down to their downstairs bar and then come back up after eating.
We left to go to another establishment where we were welcomed. Get over the attitude!!
It all began with my reservation, I was advised to arrive at 3 pm as afternoon tea finished at 4 pm. I now realise why, because if takes 40 minutes to arrive. While we were waiting the tea cocktails kept us interested. The afternoon tea was a huge disappointment when it arrived. The sandwiches were mediocre, the scones came without cream or jam, however, there were knives provided. The day old fishcakes were crumbly as you would expect, as with the dried out fetta quiches.
The best item on our $45 tiered tray was the Sara lee carrot cake. Now, onto service.. the waitresses were polite, however, all with a memory of a fish with no common sense. They have clearly only been trained to bring out food, but not collect dishes. As you may have guessed, there was no tip left. The Loft should just stick with cocktails.
I don't really know why people have given The Loft such bad reviews! I went here on the weekend for my hen's day for high tea and we had a wonderful time! The teas were lovely, we were taken to our seats promptly, and the staff were really friendly. Not to mention the food which was wonderful! The lounges were so comfortable and it was just lovely overlooking the water and watching the boats go past. We all had the best time, and I'd totally do it all over again! The ambience was gorgeous and... different! I really loved it!
My only criticism would be their booking system. I didn't like having to fill out some form, then wait a couple of days to hear whether or not I had a booking. It was quite annoying, and I couldn't really understand why they make bookings that way.
I visited the Loft on a Saturday evening and had one of the best nights out I have had in Sydney in a few years! The music, the ambience, the staff and the drinks were all superb! I will definitely be back - me and my girlfriend had a great night - lots of eye candy and good times.
One word for The Loft: Infuriating. Went for a high tea and the problems began as soon as we arrived. The Maitre de could not be bothered to seat us, we were placed at the wrong table, it took 45mins for drinks to arrive, the food was barely passable nor was value for money, and yes the cocktails were weak! (Tip: drink wine by the glass.) Staff dumped the food on the table without service or ceremony and then took 2 hours to remove the plates once empty.
Look, the view is fine but there are so many places in Sydney where you can get a water and city views. I overheard the staff complaining that they were so busy and understaffed but by far the majority of people there had pre-booked, so it shouldn't have been a shock to management.
I should have read the reviews first. Loft people: you've got to learn to provide great service. That's how you make money. Let me explain. I was on a date with a friend from New Zealand last Thursday night, and were going to go dancing at La Cita. We were hungry, it was full, so I thought The Loft would be a place to impress with a couple of great cocktails and a little bit of food.
But The Loft has lost it. What I remember is a place with real ambience, talented bartenders, and a fantastic view, both inside and out. What we got was two cocktails in 45 minutes, none of the food we ordered, and complete indifference from the bar staff (or, at any rate, the guy behind the bar with the little headset thing who could only complain that they were short-staffed due to a party below at Bungalow 8).
What I left with was about half an hour's conversation that I didn't get a chance to have with my friend because I was stuck at the bar chasing the cocktails I'd ordered ages ago, an empty belly due to the food that never arrived, an extra $60-80 that I would have spent on another cocktail each and two dishes of food ordered, and a certain sense of anxiety that, after complaining, the bartender probably spat in my drink.
I'm not accusing, just letting you know how I felt... Loft guys, due to your standard of service, I walked out of there spending just $30 when I wanted, actually wanted, to spend around $100. You may be able to make money like that, but you could make a lot more with proper standards of service. Not that I care, there are plenty of bars in Sydney that get the basics right, given my experience, the Loft is no longer one of them.
Went there on a Sat night and I must agree to most of the past reviews. I couldn't book my birthday on a Sat night which is apparently only reserved for business partners of the Loft.
I should have listed to most of the people who had reviewed this place as 95% of all in this site and on other website has commented on the rude door staff who, even though my friend came at an early night, refused entry for whatever reason. They seem inconsistent to who they were letting in. Some of my guest, although dressed well, felt insulted when the rude door staff looked them up and down.
It such a shame as the place is great, drinks fantastic and the tapas divine. Relax on the door policy and loose the attitude. I undertsand and appreciatte the need to have some sort of standard but it is so inconsistent. It is just way too much effort to oraganise a get together at a place like this.
I went to High Tea on a Sunday afternoon with 6 girlfriends for a birthday and I must disagree with other feedback. We had such a great afternoon, it was raining so we had a cosy table inside, food was scrumptious and just enough for tea, the tea was great (its T2 so no surprise there) but the cocktails they've created out of them are very very tasty, not to mention they have a non alcoholic range from the tea's also! Service was efficient and friendly. We all had such a great time and I wouldn't hesitate recommending it to anyone at all! Big thumbs up Loft.
