I have eaten here twice over the last 2 weeks, I must say I was a bit scared after reading this website on how the food and staff would be, I must say that I experienced nothing but good things when I have eaten here for dinner on Monday nights.
The food is pretty good considering they start at $6 a plate and you're in a pub, so no complaints there, the staff are polite without being friendly (we are in a pub afterall) and the time it took for them to cook a meal even when it was pretty full was about 15 to 20 minutes.
So I'd recommend this place to people and I will also go back and dine again, I haven't tried a lunchtime meal here though, so I'd recommend coming for dinner if you want your experience to reflect what I did.
A small bistro right at the back of the pub with a little courtyard for outdoor dining/drinking. The food took some time to arrive (about 20 minutes) and the service wasn't really great though they were not rude.
However for $6 (50 cents extra for sauce) for steaks/chicken schnitzel/grilled fish, it's great value. I must commend them on how well they've done the steak. I requested for medium rare and it was just that - nicely grilled on the outside with the full flavour of barbequed meat, and rare in the middle. No salad with the dish though I can't complain cos it's just 6 buck. Can do with an improvement on the chips which were too oily though crunchy. The chicken was well marinated and crispy too.
You'll need to pay first before eating. Paying by credit card is a bit of a pain cos you'll need to order your food where the bistro is and then walk over to the pub counter to pay up.
Nice pub in Camperdown with a renovated set up of the old style pubs with the tiled walls and a cool little beer garden, new team running the kitchen producing some very impressive stuff for pub grub. Worth a look
Used to go here regularly a few years ago - thought we'd drop in for 'old times sake'. Awful. The staff used to be fantastic - friendly and felt like they enjoyed their work and made you feel welcome. Well, those days are certainly gone - the staff were rude, unhelpful and arrogant. The food never used to be the best in town but it was sometimes really good value for money and always edible. This visit, the food took an eternity, the staff didn't care and were rude when we complained. The food eventually arrived cold. Needless to say we left and will never return.
This was my absolute favourite place for $5 steak when I was a student. They do my medium perfectly, and it is the only place I will actually eat hot chips. yum.
The courtyard is an intimate space and perfect booking for a party. The staff are super friendly and the cocktails are delicious. Try the Polish Rouge - magic!
It's good value but at what cost. Poor service and the very small outdoors area is an oven in the summer sun. Very very average but the staff are polite.
We had to wait an hour for our lunch. People who got served after us, had finish eating and left by the time we received our cold steak sandwiches and my 'medium well' steak 'medium rare'. The other two dishes didn't arrive.
The manager was rude, and argued for over 10 minutes when we complained to her about the service and the food. I personally have never come across a manager who quite simply was not willing to compromise, but made matters worse. At least, the bartender gave us something to talk about for the hour we waited in hunger!
Today we decided to have lunch at the Alfred. The order was taken, but then we had to wait over 60 minutes for our food to arrive. After asking the bar staff where our food was on two occasions, we were then told it would be another 5-10 minutes. When it did arrive only four of the meals were ready and they were very ordinary. We were made to feel very unwelcome. We did get our money back, but a return visit is not an option.
