Went for a nice pub dinner which was a mistake. Won't go back unless they re-jig the menu and get a new chef. Cold meals, tasteless and poorly presented. Not the place to eat but maybe eat slop as a uni student (which was observed). Aaaarrghh.

This 'hotel' is a local for me so I suppose I visited with high hopes rather than high expectations since I'd love to have a local pub that serves great food!

The food was surprisingly good for a pub, but I must point out that the prices weren't pub prices (although the trend seems to be for pubs/hotels to be charging near restaurant prices for meals these days). I felt it was all rather expensive considering the very average ambience and service the place offers, something that not even the best food could overcome for me!

I won't rush back since there's a dozen other places within 100m that offer better overall value.

The new Licensee and Management team have really given this place a shake. All the rude/inept staff are now gone, the bistro menu has changed and has daily specials, the meat raffle prizes on a Friday night have increased, karaoke on a Thursday night rocks and live bands on a Friday night are sensational, (Wes Carr winner of Oz Idle and currently No.1 on the music charts played here every Friday for over a year before going onto Idle. All the footy games shown on the big screens and in the courtyard/beer garden, also late at night it turns into a night club with the overhead lights dimmed and the jukebox screeching it packs out after about 10pm.

Last couple of months later in the week you haven't been able to move in the bottom bar, the place is on fire!!! A great young and diverse crowd and the security guards are friendly and accommodating. (Only drawback is the drinks are pricy). Anyway get down there!

Friday 07/11/08 we had a party of eight, we had a great time, food was great, good value, only downfall, no dining room, I think when you find a table you have to hold on to it there was room outside but the heaters were on and was much too hot, everyone out there were complaining, which much later was eventually turned off, but we had found four lounge chairs with a small table which served its purpose, bit crampy but ok.

Went here with my best friend and her hubby for dinner. I had been told that it was quite good by another friend of mine and suggested that we give it a go.
All three of us were asked for ID, which to me is always a compliment..hahahah, even though that may just be their policy. The crowd seemed to be in their mid 20’s so that was good. Didn’t surprise me considering that this is just around the corner from UNSW.

I ordered the 6 dollar steak with garlic mash and mushroom gravy. Steak was great, mash was excellent, mushroom gravy was superb. The sauce is irresistible. I practically licked the plate clean! Ordered a side dish of veggies as well and they were perfectly cooked. My best friend and her other half were quite happy with the food as well. She ordered the lamb shanks and the other half, the chicken schnitzel.

All-in-all I spent about 12 dollars. Had a LLB to wash it down. We had decided that this place was definitely worth the trip back. Will be visiting again. I can already taste that mushroom gravy….mmmmmmm
NOTE: My rating for the drinks covers the meal, didn't really have many drinks at all.

Having not been back since they have done the refurbishement, I was pleasantly surprised when I walked in! The new courtyard area looked great and when I sampled the food, it was right up there for pub food. Can recommend dropping in and checking it out!

Great staff and that includes the security guards, nice welcoming environment. Stays open late most nights and the bar staff will remember your drinks and have a chat. World famous meat tray raffles on friday nights are great quality.

So the food here is not bad for steak, but the drinks here are a total rip off. Staff are very rude it’s like they don’t even care that you are there.

This place is good value when in search of a $6 steak. On this occasion I decided to give the other menu items a chance. I ordered their lamb shanks with garlic mash. Decent attempt at the lamb and pretty good value at $12. You can't really expect too much at that price. Not much else you can say about the service, as this is a pub and they just serve up what you order. This is probably one of the rare pubs in this area that has avoided getting a facelift. Simple bistro layout with a kitchen churning out good value meals. Everything you need.

I was in Sydney on holiday and thought the Regent was brill, spent several nights propping the bar up, thought everyone was friendly specially charlie and my favourite barman karl the steak in pepper sauce was my favourite hope I return soon.
