This place used to be a good gay bar but now it's been taken over by straight women, what a shame! The downstairs bar is quicker/easier to order drinks but the commercial music video's they have playing on the TV screens often doesn't sync/match up with the music they are actually playing. So, you will be watching a music video with the sound down while a completely different other song is playing, weird.
The upstairs bar service is a bit slow but it looks "classier" with a fancy chandelier and cool giant Tiki head but the music is never engaging. They play no-name funk or weird music which I have never heard of. I dunno, but when I go out, I like to know the music that is being played but the music up here is all jazzy/tribal/funk music with no words?! I can't even describe the music here, it's like funky muzak.
I like sitting on the "middle" floor which is situated between the stairs between both floors. It has a comfy lounge and you can "people-watch" all the party-goers going up and down. This place is only good for starter drinks, then move onto a better/bigger club.
The cocktail I had here was amazing, the strawberries and cream is a must try. As for the atmosphere, if I was single it would have been pretty drab, lots of men and women old enough to be my parents getting trashed and dancing to trashy music but maybe I went on the wrong night (friday). I would go back if only for another strawberries and cream.
The Colombian is unique Oxford Street experience. The weekday regulars are the usual myriad of Darlinghurst's weird and wonderful. Come the weekend and the bar turns into a crazy day-club/recovery with excellent djs, dancing on the chairs or tables and throbbing music that can be heard from across the road. Not for the faint hearted!
I used to love this place!!! But after an experience with an aggressive bouncer I will never go again. He used undue force and claimed I was drunk. I had had 3 drinks and nothing else. Witnesses were also shocked and stated that it was not me that was drunk it was the person that I was dancing with who had been there all day. As a resident of Crown St, highly respected by most establishments, a professional who getting rather tired of 'attitude' and inappropriate treatment by questionable security personnel, that I had heard of before and finally experienced recently. I will not be going again and will be telling my many friends to meet me at other venues like Slide.
I liked it after coming out of a club, it was open until 6! Well done. The top floor have a lot of people dancing like a club but not so pretentious at about 5 am. Pretty good, I thought. I'll be back.
The Columbian hotel used to be a place where you could go to have fun and hang out with your mates. Over the last few months though the feel of the place has changed and I believe this is down to the staff in the place. Generally they are ok but not good. More often than not they are rude and unhelpful. I have to say security staff are rude. They are also extremely agressive and not very professional in their approach to dealing with situations. This should be a place where you should feel safe and comfortable instead more often than not, you get attitude from the uncaring security staff.
I find the staff at the Colombian to be homophobic, they lack fun and they suppress human spirit. It would appear that it has lack of understanding gay culture and tolerance of difference. I have also lost my ring that my grandmother gave me and would like it back, if someone found it. The security staff at the place are rude and violent.
