We came here for our anniversary. Parking wasn't as difficult as I'd expected, there is street parking. I found the valet parking a bit strange as the allocated parking seemed to be a little off patch on a grassy footpath...? We found the atmosphere lovely. It was buzzing, with an open kitchen. The only bizarre thing was having a metal railing guard on the Inside of the restaurant, so careful of fabrics that easily catch.
We got a great spot right in the corner, window view but our table was small. My entree of yellow fin tuna was one of the best I've had. Followed by the dory though not as memorable as the tuna. My partner ordered the famous snapper pie which was impressive served at the table. If you're not into truffle, don't order this dish, or sit next to someone ordering it. It has quite an aroma. Probably not one for me, but my partner seemed to enjoy it.
Dessert was banana souffle. Not the best I've tasted, but the pecan ice cream is worth mentioning. Service was friendly and professional. Value wise, compared to other fine dining places in the city with great views, I think this place is pretty pricey. It is lovely for a special occasion if you can get a window spot. Otherwise, I really don't think it'll be worth it.
The location is right by the water with quite a nice view. Decor is not flashy, timber floor, fluoro lights, service ok. Food wise the entrees are quite ok, not spectacular. Only 1 dish worth mentioning is their Snapper pie. Initially we don't know what the fuss is about for a fish that charges nearly $50 but seems every table is ordering it as the pie is served in front of the customers so we ordered one as well, turned out to be quite good as it has truffle infused sauce which makes it very fragrant. Dessert nothing to die for so just go there, have the pie and don't go back.
Had a wonderful lunch, the outlook is pleasant over the bay. Suggest try the mixed oysters, they are something special. Main was exceptional, had the Signature, Snapper Pie, and Dory. Dessert was too die for, keep room for the souffle.
Service was friendly and very helpful with the wines. Very nice, looking forward to second's.
A disappointing meal here recently. It was as if they started with good produce but then tried to do too much with it, too many flavours on each plate, and poorly combined. Service (especially from one waiter) verged on surly at times, and was consistently inattentive. Nice location right on the water, but I expect more for the price.
The location is brilliant, with a somewhat rustic view looking back towards the city, only to be eclipsed though by the service and sensational snapper pie! Don't be tempted by anything else, it is truly delicious and the way in which it is served is a real treat.
Lovely setting, great view, attentive service but everything else leave a lot to be desired. It was all perfectly acceptable but "perfectly acceptable" does not make a fine dining restaurant, which this aspires to be. No "to-die-for" factor anywhere, except (maybe) in the pie crust (only the crust, mind you, not what was underneath).
Cost: the oysters had a mark-up of roughly 220%, the wine was marked up around 210% and that's compared to retail prices. At $200 for two (2 entrees, 2 maincourse, 1 bottle of wine from the lower end of the price scale) this is definitely not value for money.
Maybe the SMH Good Food Guide should go back to using anonymous judges, that Hat was definitely not awarded by the dining public!
There was 8 of us on the night, the place looked very slick and classy the kitchen nice and open filled with chefs and cooks that looked very professional. The senior waiter took us to our table (it was three square tables) four of us were sitting between the joints of the tables also four of us had the window behind with no space left for passage or service, I found a little bit strange considering the restaurant was half full (looked like there were way too many tables for a restaurant that it's trying to do fine dining).
The entree arrived with in reasonable time, I had the confit of New Zealand king salmon with crispy quail egg, the balance of flavors was very good and the salmon was cooked to perfection. We decide after the entree to change wine from a riesling to something more consistent but the "sommelier" didn't seem like he had much knowledge of the wine list.
Shortly after the mains arrived, I had the snapper pie, which apparently is the kitchen signature dish, the flavor was very complex with truffle and the Roma tomato nicely smoked, I found the fish to be a little overcooked but overall a good combination of flavors for winter. My friend had the jewfish, and he didn't look too happy about his choice, he asked me if I wanted to try it, after the snapper pie the jewfish tasted really bland but he also found it to be bland.
Overall a good night but the prices don't justify the amount of chairs in the room, the waiter leaning over the customers to access the table and the lack of knowledge of the wait staff. Hopefully it would be better next time. One more thing, the lack of an ashtray outside it's a bit silly, the floor and garden are covered in cigarette butts!
Disappointing on most fronts. Waitress was efficient but rather arrogant which doesn't do much for the atmosphere. Food for the five of us dining was average. The house specialty of the snapper pie was absolutely loaded with truffle oil which is fine if mentioned on the menu, it wasn't and two of the three who chose this meal dislike the overdone use of truffle oil.
Service was so slow between courses that we were actually just waiting for no apparent reason which really annoyed us all. One of the first tables to arrive for lunch, one of the last tables to be served and leave the restaurant. Won't be returning nor recommending.
