“Khao San” means “raw rice” in Thai. Before it became a tourist hotspot, the street was a major rice market for Bangkok. Khao San and the streets nearby are also Bangkok’s center of dancing, partying and splashing water during Songkran festival.

Don't know what a lot of people expect from a thai dining experience, the service is poor but the food is excellent. Great flavours, great atmosphere and very well priced.
Came with a group of 4, BYO which is excellent and cheap corkage. Stayed all night, enjoyed the food and will be back. Pork belly was superb, if a little spicey!

Came here once last year for a quick dinner, the pad thai had noodles that were dry beyond belief, the entire dish was tasteless and bland. Could've gotten much better (and cheaper!) Thai meals down at Newtown. The desserts on display looked nice though and I thought I'd give them a go on the second chance to make up for the disappointing dinner.
Then a Spreets deal came up, promising dinner for 2 (quoted from the Spreets website): "Includes two bowls of the best prawn tom yum soup you’ll ever have.
A whole Tilapia fish cooked with curry or sweet chilli sauce. Hot seafood platter with salt and pepper calamari, fresh prawns, fish fillets, grilled mussels and soft shell crab! Plus rice for two and your choice of Any two Thai desserts from the cart! And a bottle of Woodhouse Estate 2011 Cabernet Merlot or 2010 Semillon Sauvignon Blanc to share!"
I was hoping this second chance could get this restaurant back in my good books but I was again disappointed.
The soup tasted like they've been made with instant noodle sachets (in fact, it tastes Exactly the same as the Mama brand tom yum instant noodles) with so much Msg my dining companion and I had to keep downing water to combat the resultant thirst. Best prawn tom yum soup? I could've made the same thing at home for 50 cents!
Seafood platter was alright, but the batter on the fish and calamari was much too salty. One of the soft shell crab pieces was really fishy.
As for the fish, the waitress didn't even bother asking us if we wanted curry or sweet chilli sauce, she just dumped it on our table, walked off and proceeded to pretend not noticing me waving at her to ask her about the choice of sauces. We gave up after getting no service from anyone at all, and dug into the fish. Now the presentation of this dish was quite nice with the fish upright and the sauce drizzled on top, but that was the only good part about it.
The sweet chilli sauce was literally the kind of sweet chilli sauce you'd get from the supermarkets. The fish itself was so fishy my dining companion gagged at the taste of it, even deep-frying the fish can't cover up the fishy-ness. We left the fish barely touched because it was so inedible.
Soon after the fish was plopped on our table another staff rudely dumped our 'dessert' in front of us. Now if I remember correctly the terms of the Spreets vouchers states that the meal included rice And diner's choice of dessert. None of that happened. Where's the rice for two? What happened to choosing dessert? All we got for dessert were two soap cakes that funnily enough, tasted like soap!
The attitude from this restaurant is to get through as many diners as possible, and to hell with what's advertised we'll just dump whatever's in the kitchen on the table.
Sure enough the decor of the place is nice, and the tuk tuk out front adds a nice vibe, but all else fails. Rude ignorant staff, terrible food, and disappointing value. I gave them two chances and they screwed up. Won't ever be coming back.

We walked past Thanon Khao San around the back packer hostels area near Central Station in Sydney. The décor resembles that of a street food market in Asia, and we were ready for some authentic Thai cuisine.
The duck curry is served inside a coconut, with the skin slightly charred creating the extra flavour – certainly better than most other duck curries we have tasted. The sauce was mopped up with some roti on the side. The bbq chicken wings and pad thai were also excellent.

March 17, 2012 - First time, I had a great night out but with a Scoopon voucher, I came back with my husband for lunch and it was disappointing. Service was rushed and It was very friendly, chicken pad Thai had hardly any chicken pieces and the chicken curry had no sauce. Pad Thai was flavorless and sweet and we purchased some dessert pieces to try later and they were nothing special. (they so need to label them so we don't have to ask what each piece was). I won't be back that's for sure.
February 25, 2011 - A large group of us came here for an early dinner on Thursday night and we walked out happy and full. I have walked passed this restaurant and when I saw good reviews on food blogs, I suggested a work dinner here and even though it was 6.30pm the place was full. Luckily, we booked a table and we were served water straight away in tin cups which reminded us of being out in the bush. A mixture of dishes were shared by the whole table, and everyone enjoyed everything I ordered.
Massaman Curry, duck curry, pad thai, seafood stir fry with chilli and basil, spicy papaya salad, bbq pork, fried wontons with quail eggs and also pork. All were great and BYO is also a bonus. I will definitely be back!

Visited the restaurant last night after wanting to go for months when a Spreets deal came up. When we arrived the rude waitress immediately took our vouchers. We had two options according to the voucher - the sauce for our whole fish and our desserts from their "hawker cart". They would not allow us to choose our fish or dessert, even when we questioned several of the waitresses on a number of occasions. As we no longer had the vouchers we couldn't contest. The seafood was delightful but the desserts were very disappointing as was the service! The group buy voucher was terrible value. Would recommend just buying off the menu.

I went with a discount voucher (pad thai and drink-wine or soft drink included) for lunch today and the experience was terrible. Reading other reviews I believe the experience would be different if one pay full price or if one go with a voucher. Terrible mistake, as vouchers normally attract people who if they like the restaurant, will be happy to come back and pay full price for the dishes (as I do).
Pad thai was ordinary (and too sweet) and the beef was dry. The house red wine was terrible, I just had a sip and left the rest. But the worst part was the service, unfriendly and even rude. I have other voucher but I won't be going back.

The Waitress, I think her name is Pui. She is a really friendly person. The great service she provided was outstanding, as well as dishes she recommended were fabulous. Definitely the best Thai Restaurant at Thai Town if you're looking forward to the original taste of Thai. 10 Out of 10 for her service.

Khao San is a popular road in Thailand filled with markets, swanky bars, clubs, restaurants, massage parlours, bookshops, market stalls, tattoo shops and much, much more. There are pop up cocktail bars at night and it is a fun place for locals and tourists alike to enjoy.
The Owners, Dew and Thomas wanted to bring the magic of Khoa San Road to Sydney. From the moment you step inside their restaurant you feel like you are on vacation in Thailand. The experience is truly "from Thai Street to your table".
Food that we ate:
Entrée Prawn cakes and BBQ pork skewers
Pineapple fried rice with prawn and squid served in a dug out fresh pineapple.
Chili chine Broccoli with Crispy Pork belly (My favourite)
Papaya Salad - Very refreshing and cleansing on the palate.
Ducy and Lychee Curry served in a fresh coconut. Our curry was made mild but the chef will make all meals to your Chilli requirements.
We found the local Thai delicacies we tried for dessert were a little too rich for us
The service was terrific without being intrusive and the meal was very satisfying (portion sizes were generous). On Friday and Saturday Night the place comes alive with local Thai musicians playing and supper for the night owl is served from 11pm until 3am.
Overall we've given Thanon Khao San a rating of 8.5. Well worth the visit - Angela.

Just came back from this so called restaurant. We had a voucher, but, didn't have the printed version, they didn't accept the electronic version in my Iphone, and, we left, and, won't get back, since the staff were very rude, impolite and unprofessional! They just think about money, and, have no idea of customer service or...
