I have read reviews on Eatability many times and felt it was about time I gave something back. I am a long term resident of Glebe and this is my place to go for "guaranteed satisfaction". You know, somewhere that you go when you're tired and can't be bothered in general and know that it is always going to be good.
I mainly get takeaway so my review largely relates to the food rather than the "dining experience". As a place to sit down to a meal it isn't particularly special, it is crowded (in a pleasant way.... and I don't normally tolerate crowded). It almost has the feel of a "local" if you were to compare it to a pub.... only... starker. It has a very no nonsense feel to it as do the staff.
The food is impeccable. It is always fresh, and not just literally, the meat is always tender, the flavours always full.... not watery but not over the top either.
I wish I was better at giving reviews so as to do this place justice. The other day I got some Thai food from somewhere else in Glebe as Thai on Wok was closed on a Monday night and I thought I should try and expand my horizons. This only served to remind me how good a thing I am on with Thai on Wok.
Finally - the value.... I am hesitant to say this for fear that they will read it and put the prices up, but in my opinion the food served is such great quality for the very affordable prices they charge. My favourites..... Beef Massaman or the Chilli and Coconut Prawns. Best Satay Chicken sticks entree in the world. Can you tell I really like Thai on Wok?
This is my favourite restaurant in all of Sydney, and so far in the world (except for a little Japanese joint on Waikiki beach, Hawaii - southern end of Kalakaua Ave - but they cost ten times a Thai on Wok meal). I've eaten in Europe, the US and Japan (best quality food, on average, in the world) yet for taste, quality and price Thai on Wok in Sydney wins, hands down.
I've eaten at most of Sydney's 3 hat places, spent $1,000 on a single meal and yet $20 at Thai on Wok (lunch time special) exceeds these places. That isn't to say you should spend the rest of your life at Thai on Wok. Those expensive meals I've had, at those lovely restaurants in Sydney weren't a waste. It's just when you eat a meal at Thai Wok it boggles your mind that they can provide just great food with such simplicity whilst retaining the ability to cook a dish with depth.
It's like listening to the Eagles on a $50,000 set of speakers and Amps. Yep your going to hear things you never knew existed. It's going to be a great experience in its own right yet Thai on Wok will give you a similar taste experience, without the snotty waiters, without the complexity and difficulty that surrounds the organising and execution of a night out at a 3 hat restaurant, and for one tenth the price.
Moving on, the staff are hyper-efficient, polite in a standard Asian fashion - don't expect a friendly 10 minute conversation these people serve literally hundreds of meals an hour during their peak times (evenings, especially on weekends). They're friendly and quite chatty though when they've got the time - try 11am in the morning, so people I don't want to see vexatious complaints that you couldn't hold a conversation with the dude at the front during Friday night peak when his juggling 20 orders and 20 customers queuing up. More importantly they know how to cook. Sure its a bit of a fight to get a seat on a Friday night, and yeah it's noisy, a tight squeeze at times, and a hole in the wall with tables from an old City Extra restaurant but to focus on these trivialities is to fail to appreciate the out of this world food these people produce.
Moving on to the food. The capsicum (their signature ingredient) is fresh, and snappy. I normally don't like this vegetable; it's usually soggy, and rather flavourless. Yet capsicum at Thai on Wok takes on a bitter tone but ending with a sweet crunchy note. It's just perfect if you ask me. The pumpkins stew fry. I hate pumpkin yet when I've eaten it at Thai on Wok it's like falling in love all over again. So full of flavour, fresh and tender it's like butter. The soups (their tom yums are a flu killer) are delicate, flavoursome and light. The tom yums are full of ginger and citrus notes with wonderful earthy tones from the mushies. They've recently changed the recipe with a new type of mushroom that just soaks up this broth - eat it with some rice (like most westerners I didn't realise that the traditional way). Wow is all I can say. The curries have the tender beef, full of beautiful veggies. Their Masaman is simply mind blowing.
Of course the Pad Thai deadly are the big guns at Thai on Wok. Just full of wonderful flavour. A slice of fresh lime and no peanuts or other stuff. Not too dry, not full of jar mixed sauce - the tofu browned properly - these Pad Thai's are just a great dish - a must have. Best of all expect two completely different beasts when you order the beef or chicken. The beef in my view is being the stand out of the two. Though the chicken is also an excellent choice.
Really people you don't know Thai food until you've eaten at Thai on Wok. The servings are huge and you don't get jipped on the seafood. The tom-yum prawn has at least 5-6 prawns in it, and for under $8 or so bucks that is a bargain in anyone's language (and city). I've been seriously tempted, when forced to eat at other Thai restaurants, to drag the chef out by the ear and pay for them to eat Thai on Wok. I've even had friends run Thai restaurants who swear by Thai on Wok. It is the challenge of Thai Restaurants and I'd say at the end of the day is one of best restaurants in this city, nay the world.
There is some good Crown St (and other Surry Hill) Thai places but Thai on Wok still blow them out of the water. And at least you can get a seat and not have queue jumping pretentious Sydney celebrities taking your place as you get at the Crown St Thai places.
I've been eating there since 1999 and it's been consistently excellent. That reminds me, the satay chicken (first thing I ever ate, I still remember it so clearly, to this day) was and is just amazing. The peanut sauce is like eating gold (well I imagine that's what eating gold is like). The chicken being so fresh and tasty (not like the rubbery soulless stuff you get anywhere else) makes you wonder if they're not slaughtering their produce out the back. It's that fresh. Oh the other entrees are wonderful. The curry puffs are light, full of fresh flavours - not the frozen curry powder fare you find at most "upper" class Thai Restaurants.
I've known many a good chef, at all spectrum's of the eating world and The Thai on Wok crew demonstrate the values, care and skills that go into make wonderful food. To summarise tables, noise, and space (even the air we breathe) don't matter when you're eating food this good.
That place is boiling hot in summer, freezing cold in winter, but delicious all year round! The best pad see ew I've found anywhere in Sydney, actually the best Thai in Sydney. No frills, perhaps, but its fresh and tasty and well worth the wait.
Thai food in Glebe is about as ubiquitous as hemp fabric clothing, bongs and students with dreadlocks. So it stands to reason that you could quite easily fall into the trap of poor Thai fare without trying too hard. So I offer you this tip: When it comes to good Asian food, a good rule is to follow the masses. If an establishment is busy, and you see at least a 15% Asian participation rate, chances are the food is good.
Thai on Wok, on Glebe Point Road is one such place. On any given day, you’ll find it packed full of people, either eating in or waiting for takeaway meals. To be fair, there isn’t a great deal of space to sit and eat – this is an incredibly popular takeaway café however whether you stay or go, you can see your meal being prepared from scratch, right in front of you courtesy of the open galley. Consider it you're front row seat to live gastronomy theatre – there’s fire, there’s movement, there’s artistic flipping of ingredients from woks.
The menu is comprehensive, running the gamut from Fish Cakes to Jungle Curry and Pad Thai. Start with a Tom Yum Soup – a study in simple fresh, fragrant ingredients culminating in a spicy, aromatically earthy flavoured soup that is sure to cure whatever winter ills you might have. Other popular favourites with the locals include Pad See Eiw with beef – the noodles are soft (meaning they’re extra fresh), the beef is generous and tender, the vegetables are crisp, perfectly blanched and bright and it’s all pulled together with that deliciously charred flavour that only comes from an expert’s wok. Their Pad Thai is also well worth trying: give it a go with prawns.
If stir-fried dishes are what you’re looking for, try the chicken with eggplant – the delicately soft texture of the eggplant compliments the chicken well – make sure you order plenty of steamed rice to soak up the saucy goodness.
There’s a reason these guys can afford to shut up shop for one month every year and head back to Thailand..seriously fresh ingredients, cooked expertly. And every year, the locals count down the days until they return.
I went there last night for the first time..... it was very busy, we waited outside for about 30mins just for a table, but food came and it was ok. The service was horrible and it was so noisy.
Firstly, grab a takeaway, the place is loud, if you can get a seat and it hot in summer. We travel across the bridge for this when we want Thai to accompany a night in. The food is fresh great value for money and has never disappointed in all our years ordering from this place. Green chicken curry and the giant cuffy puffs (picture jaffle size) are fantastic!!
This is a great place to eat Thai in Sydney. It is cheap, fast and fresh. Everything is prepared right in front of you and they use lots of fresh vegetables. Although the surroundings could be better, it is a great place to have a quick bite to eat. I have been going to this restaurant since 2001 and the quality of the food has not decreased as the popularity has risen which is impressive. The service varies depending on how busy the restaurant is but that's not why I go to Thai on Wok. I highly recommend the red chicken curry and the minced beef salad.
Best Pad Thai I've ever had! Its worth going to what is literally a takeaway shop and battling with the crowds to get it. Used to be a regular when we lived nearby and now that we've moved I can't find a Pad Thai that comes close to how good this one was.
Fantastic, my favourite Thai ever, the food is very very fresh, always great, service is quick ish considering how busy they get. Cheap and we always leave feeling happy and healthily full for around $10 - $15 a person...and with some left overs for tomorrows lunch too!
