If you were looking for the best Thai restaurant in Newtown I would have to say it's Thai Pothong. I love the food, the staff are very friendly and prompt and it's good value for money. It's great for a birthday party, a casual dinner with friends and family, or even a nice dinner for two. It suits any occasion, and although a rather busy/loud atmosphere, it still manages to be a quite demure.
I couldn't name one thing bad about this place, although maybe the fact you have to wait 10 hours to get a table if you don't book in advance, but to me that just suggests how popular Thai Pothong really is. Now I'm hungry!

Thai Patong has lovely food and the service is very good. I would, however, avoid it at all costs in the evening on a Friday and Saturday night. It has become so big that it seems a little like a factory. One of the waiters told me it now seats about 300, enough said! It is definitely more expensive than other Thai restaurants on King St. Quite a lot more in fact, and I'm not too convinced that it's so much better to justify it.
As I said, the food is lovely, the service is very good, but it has become far too big. Unless you're lunching there when it is not as crowded, it has somewhat lost the appeal it had before it took over the shop space (or 2) next to it.

I've been here many and am never disappointed with the quality of the food or service. They have remained consistent over the years. Favourites for me include the Miang Goong as an entree along with the panang and green curries - which are particularly satisfying. We've also had some variations on the whole fried fish theme and they too have been great, with fresh and succulent fish and tasty sauces. I definitely recommend.

Yellow curry was just great, this place never disappoints me, except for the service every now and then. Certainly recommend it.

Very lovely food. A little overpriced for the serving size I think but that's not a huge gripe. Service was fantastic, the place was packed but we always had a friendly waiter to refill our water glasses and attend to our needs, we also managed to get a table for nine around dinner time when it was really busy, very impressed.
All the food we got was great, particularly the pad si ew and the chicken with pumpkin. The only major disappointment was the pad thai. It was seriously the most flavorless pad thai I've ever had which seemed like such a shame considering the rest of the food. That aside, will definitely go back.

I haven't been here for aged but my parent who were visiting from overseas wanted to try this restaurant again. Saturday it was very busy but food came out quickly and we didn't have to wait too long, service was friendly but sometimes the waiter would be forgetful when we requested to see the menus again. Food was average and I thought its a bit over priced. Still it was a good night out and free bottle of wine on your bday is a bonus!
Jan 05, 2009 - As soon as we walked through the doors on Sunday night, the staff were so friendly and it was service with a smile. Since the restaurant wasn't at full capacity the noise wasn't really a factor but the food does come out really fast.
After reading the reviews here I chose the red duck curry and the seafood special, flambe, massaman lamb curry and the papaya salad as an entree. The food was so tasty and even though the portions look small the curries are rich and filled everyone up as we wanted to eat more rice to use up all the curry sauce. The only disappointment was the papaya salad which wasn't anything special.
Definitely would like to come back to get the duck curry again and try other items on the menu. As mentioned it is a bit pricier than other restaurants but the quality and the taste plus the friendly service makes it all worth it!

Great food especially red duck curry and the seafood special, ( the flaming one ) was delicious. I found the chix satays bit overcooked. This place is generally very good with service but our waiter must be on an off night. He delivered the order wrong and when asked to remove one he was very upset with us. He then left the food on the bill and only removed it when asked twice. The other waiters seemed to be doing fine, think he just did not want to be there. All in all a good experience, would definitely go back.

Decent and fairly authentic Thai food in nice surrounds with friendly Thai staff.
We had all vegetarian options: veggie fresh spring rolls, satay skewers, fried rice with tofu and green curry vegetables. The rice was huge, and although lacking the lime and the smoky taste of traditional Thai fried rice, it was tasty. The green curry veggie was great with just the right amount of chilli and almost all the proper ingredients. The fresh rolls weren't as good as the other items but the satay sauce was fantastic.
Will be back if in the area again, the desserts looked very pretty but we were too full. Chat Thai in the City is better and similarly priced for authentic Thai cuisine but is more crowded and less spacious inside.

Service is exceptional, all the waiters are so friendly and inviting...very helpful, won't even let me scoop my own rice, haha. Delicious Thai food despite the prices. I especially love their signature dish - the one with the seafood and eggs with the flames and the red duck curry is awesome! Best Thai restaurant hands down!
