This restaurant sets a high standard for thai food and for service. Service is so professional it makes me feel like royality! Food is always served promptly, hot and delicious! Price is above average but the experience is well worth it. Last time we visited the waitress gave us toenail clippers (quite a bizarre gift, but a small gesture like that was genuine and so cute!).
I take friends + family there to impress the pants off them. Once had a romantic dinner, and I had candles placed on the table (as requested) and we stuffed ourselves stupid and drank for just under $90. Love love love love!
If this restaurant were a man I'd marry it, the Miang Goong entree has to be the best thing I have ever tasted in my entire life. Orgasmic! And everything else is absolutely delicious and the service is the best service you'll ever get Ever! No wonder they won Best Thai Restaurant 4 yrs in a row! Slightly pricier than most Thai places but well worth it. Talking about it again now makes me hungry for it.
Thai Pothong has got to be one of the most overrated Thai restaurants that I have ever tried, especially when it claims to have won the award for the best Thai restaurant in Sydney.
We ordered the crispy fish with 3 flavours, the BBQ lamb cutlets and rice for 2. The fish had good flavour, however, it was dry and chewy. For $28 or so, it was really not worth it. It was accompanied with a single piece of lettuce and one stem of coriander. Nor was the lamb worth it's price of about $23. The flavours were good, but not the best that I have tasted. It too was accompanied with 2 slices of capsicum and one stem of coriander.
Furthermore, there were only 4 cutlets, and was poorly presented, the lamb looked
like it was just chucked on the plate. The meal cost $58 in total, which was a total rip off. For that price, you would expect at least generous portions, or food cooked perfectly. Thai Pothong failed in both regards. Even with the 10% refund in Thai Pothong dollars, and the 'endless rice', this restaurant does not offer value for money. With $58, you can have a much more generous, filling and delicious meal at Chat Thai.
For a very large restaurant, the ambience is great, not at all noisy, and the waitstaff are very polite and friendly. The menu reads really well. But the taste does not live up to the look of this place. The food is good. But that's it-just good. I have had much better thai. Been there done that type place.
Had dinner here for our anniversary last night. We can almost still taste the food in our mouths. Fantastic. Wait staff everywhere, and only too willing to help. We booked early and were seated straight away. I ordered the grilled mixed seafood. Came with a separate little plate of chilli sauce which was amazing. Husband ordered Barramundi Curry. Heavenly.
Not a common occurrence for us, but we had dessert as well. Sticky black rice with custard and I had the fried banana. Then coffee. A perfect end to a perfect meal and evening. Great value. Couldn't believe the line of people waiting in the cold to get in. I don't blame them.
This place is fantastic. In terms of Thai food it is on the pricey side, but well worth it. The service is fantastic and the food is diovine. I have been here a few times and told many people about this restaurant.
This place is a notch above your average thai restaurant. All the dishes I have had have been of a high standard. I highly recommend the miang goong entree.
Been back recently and the food is as good as ever. I was a little scared as other friends feel this place is overrated, but not me! It's always better to book otherwise waiting in line does take a long time, but once seated the service is good and the food, surprisingly doesn't take that long to come out. Still one of my favorite thai places, if not the best I've had in Sydney.
25/9/07: I like this place, it's the best Thai I've had but the only thing is the price. It's more expensive than other places and being in Newtown where there are so many Thai places, it's still always looks booked out. The range of food is also better than your average Thai place. Highly recommended.
